Well I've been modeling out a slot ported box design for my 15" Orion H2. I came out with a fairly simple design: 4cu/ft@28hz. The maximum height for my box to be pushed comfortably to the back of my trunk is 15in, with the width being 31in and depth being 22in.

The obvious problem with this box design is that the front face of the box is too small. The cutout for the the sub is 13.75in, and the overall diameter is 15.5in. This had me thinking, how bad would it be to mount the sub to the top of the box, and have the port facing rear?

This would be the easiest solution to my problem, but I'm worried this would cause a whole bunch of phasing and/or cancellation issues. This is going in a the trunk of a 2006 Honda Accord Coupe.

Anyone have any comments or possibly pictures of this kind of setup?

My only other option would be to make a stepped box design which would be way more complicated to build.

This would be easier with a round port, but I've seen it done on slot ports as well. You could make the front of your box sloped, just enough to give you an inch or so of extra area to mount the sub. Not ideal, but it might be better than upfiring the sub. Everytime I try that in my car I get less output and more trunk rattles.
