Hi,
I need to get some advice on a simple system design for my 07 Dodge Ram Quad Cab.
I'm not looking for the holy grail of car audio, but something with more headroom and punch than the stock (60W) system. I would eventually like to get an in-dash DVD/nav system but for now I'm going to use the stock head unit with an external amp and upgraded speakers. It needs to stay stock looking for the time being. The stock head has a usable 3-band eq, fade, balance, and satellite/cd/aux changer that I use with an IPOD.
I am willing to take a small hit in overall sound to keep the stock head, but want good components for when I go with double din in dash DVD.
The quad cab stock is front 6x9, rear 5.25. According to dodge forums, you can get 6.5s in front and some 6.5s will fit in back. So here are the questions:
1) I really like music with strong midrange and punch, but that also sounds good at lower volume. Should I just get a good pair of 6.5s for the front and forget about the rear? Would it be worth it to get a matching set of comps for the rear? How about some low-mid drivers for the rear doors?
2) Can someone recommend a good set of 6.5s that have lots of body and sound good without a sub?
3) What is a good power rating amp for a 2 or 4 channel system.
4) Do any amps have good built-in speaker-> line level converters or should I look for an external unit that does this?
5) Can someone point me to a tutorial for the best possible way to door mount a set of comps? I have seen people construct MDF pieces and use deadening material in the doors.
6) Should I look into getting a bi-amped or tri-amped active system? I have active studio monitors in my home studio which I enjoy. Seems like using separate amps would be more effective than a passive crossover for each channel.
