Just picked up another pair of KEF 250B 10" subs :) (EBay ftw)

Got my first pair when I was 16 and have been a KEF nuthugger eversince :D

Back in the day, I actually had them in a custom bandpass enclosure :o (my basshead phase)

I know, I know...... wtf was I thinking?

They actually sounded great in there and the output was insane for just a pair of 10's :)

I later tossed the box and put them to far better use in my home theater system

Anyhoo, I plan on throwing them in the back of the daily beater and can't decide what type of enclosure to go with

Here's the space I have to play with.....

Shot of an el cheapo enclosure for size reference.....

I plan on using the existing 300 watt mono block amp (Kicker zx300.1)

Here are some specs on the subs as I know they're pretty hard to find nowadays (straight from the product brochure)

Woofer Cone Size: 254mm/10"
Enclosure Type: Free Air
Frequency Response: 20-500Hz + 3db
Recommended Crossover: 70 - 150Hz
Sensitivity: 91db, 2.83 @ 1M
Impedance: 4ohm
Amplifier Requirements: 12 Watts Min
Power Handling: 200 Watts
Outside Diameter: 264mm/10.4"
Mounting Depth: 115mm/4.53

Any suggestions on what type of enslosure I should go with?

Try in the area of 2 feet cubed sealed, 4 feet cubed ported.

You have an awesome sub....

I have the KEF S-250...I wonder if they are similar or different?? Mine is a dark cone with a greyish KEF logo, not bright blue...

Those specs you have seem different than the one I have.

My S-250 is optimal for .7-1.3 cubic feet (.707 qtc --> .5 qtc).

The qts is around .25, fs ~20 hz, and VAS I don't have off the top of my head....if your specs are similar to that then try to put it in .7 cubic feet sealed....or if you want vented I can get the #s for you.

Since the specs say they are intended for IB applications I wonder if the Qts would not be much higher than yours?

Yeah, I was wondering about that too...

I wonder if the OP has a build sheet for his subs? Mine came with build sheets printed out in dot matrix format, lol. Yeah!

I'll see if KEF came out with IB subs....

OK, I emailed both KEF Support UK and KEF Support NORTH AMERICA

Here are the responses I got this morning....

Hello Rick
The recommended volume for the 250 closed box is 2,900 cubic inches.

Have a good day

Dear Sir,
These drive units would sound best if they are each in a sealed enclosure. A cubic foot would be the best size enclosure. This will give the subs plenty of punch and allow them to hit low frequencies. Due to in car cabin gain they should have a 12 dB boost, giving a smooth roll off.

Best Regards

Nice...I'd say go one cubic foot for starters...

2900 cubic inches ~ 1.7 cubic feet (1728 cubic inches per cubic foot)...so don't go larger than that.

I'd go with smaller enclosure because low excursion, efficient KEFs should be used in smaller boxes.

Hey, u live nearby...if you want to hear 10" KEFs in a car let me know.

Yeah, I've been looking for a pair of cheap 1cf cubes to play around with

KEF UK went a bit more in depth with their suggestion, so that's the route I'm going with

I've always thought Free Air subs would benefit from a larger enclosure due to the stiffer suspension though

Anyhoo, where in NYC are you?

Your daily beater is one of my favorite cars of all time. It's tough to beat the FZJ80 with factory e-lockers! Trade for a sweet Range Rover? ;)

Sorry, I passed up hundreds of unlocked 80's before landed her and she's all MINE :p

Anyhoo, I couldn't wait to have an enclosure built, so I picked up a pair of ghetto cubes for $20 bucks just to play around with

Even though they're made of cheapass particleboard with air blowing past the terminal blocks, the subs still sound amazing :D

Nothing a little wood glue can't fix. DON'T USE SILICONE!!!! It will release gases while it is curing that can damage the surround of your subs. Do you hang out on fuelslut.com a lot? There is a guyt that I work with who is on there a lot - I think this sign on name is "Lifeat26psi". Small world.

I was actually thinking Gorilla glue since I have a ton of it at my shop

As for FuelSlut.com, I haven't been there in a while since we lost that domain a loooong time ago  (missed the payment deadline)

Damn automated domain snatcher nabbed it and turned it into a porn site

We've been FuelSlut.net eversince ;)

And yes, I know Lifeat26psi
