Default I'm think about changing the diver position of my 3-way front setup

I'm thinking about changing the position of my 3-way front drivers for better imaging. My midbass drivers will be moved father back (the flat section of my door approximately 10" to the left) and my midrange will be angled from the original speaker position (haven't figured out the exact angle). The tweeter will, more then likely, be mounted above the midrange.

I plan on making a 3+ liter sealed enclosure for the Peerless Exclusive 5.25" drivers. The midbass (unsure which one SLS 8", Seas L22rn4x/p, Dynaudio MW190) will be mounted IB in the doors.

I'm hoping that the midbass will still be able to play well facing the seats. The drivers will probably have a more cohesive image since they will be located closer to each other. I'm guessing that the added distance of the midrange and tweeters will help the image with a slight reduction in stage height. In the pictures, you can see their current dash location.

I have found that the best imaging I got when I was experimenting was simply making sure to point the drivers as far away as possible from ANY Panel (especially under the dash)...this was in the kicks...

At that point I didn't worry about whether they were on axis or not, just simply made sure to get rid of early reflections the best I could. I then experimented with egg crate foam under my dash, center console, and doors and got pretty solid imaging.

The drivers weren't even angled up very much if at all...they were about 45 degrees from the door pointing towards the center console...adding the foam made a huge difference as well, if you are willing to make your car a little "uglier"

Hope that helps any...

Hi,

You can also put in the Exclusive 5.25 in seat-box made of this imagery will remain consistent and it would avoid the shortcomings of phases.

What exactly is a seat box? I plan on making "boxes" that will attach to the doors.

The only advice I can give is experiment with you angles until you're BLUE and in the face and FRUSTRATED to all HELL.

When you THINK you have it right.....you're on the right track.

so you're moving the midbasses closer to your hips? are you not willing to make some pods for the exclusives on the dash? what about kicks?

Yeah, I went through the process when I mounted the mids up on the dash. Right now I'm just focusing on better imaging. My system sounds great but it reminds me a little too much of having headphones on.

Yup, I'll be moving the midbass drivers closer to the center of the car. The exclusives are way too large to fit on the dash and there is no room, to speak of, in the kick panel area.

I'll use the exclusives if I can fit them. But I'm very happy with the smooth repsonse that I get from the PPB 4" mids. They play flawlessly from 180Hz - 4,000Hz. I only wish that they had a little more detail.
