What sort of enclosure requirements?
I see that your site still shows the older V1s, will the requirements be similar?

Yes, box requirements are just about identical from the v1 to these.
The link has all of the info on the new ones -- the site is being re-built so does not have all the newest information yet.

Looking forward to it.
I've got three 10" subs in mind, this one, IDQ-10 v3 (or v2), Rsd10d (the dual-4 has a 91db sensitivity versus the single-4 88db)...I believe I've already read a review where the 12" ID-max and rsd12d were compared, but I want to make a compact install so a 10 will suffice.

Rsd10d (the dual-4 has a 91db sensitivity versus the single-4 88db)
That's because the D4 is wired in parallel... don't be fooled by this measurement.

That's because the D4 is wired in parallel... don't be fooled by this measurement.
So if i were to get the rsd10, in real terms, the D4 in series at 8ohms would yield about 88db as well? I can get the S4 for about $20 less than the D4. But if the D4 at 8ohms yields the same sensitivity as a S4, may as well get the D4 and run at 8ohms, less current draw on the amp and same sensitivity...
capnxtreme
04-30-2008, 06:06 PM
Regardless of the sensitivity, you'd still be delivering ~1/2 the power into twice the load.
I suspect the RSD's need more power to get moving than the Sundowns do.
BEAVER
04-30-2008, 06:07 PM
In series it should measure more like 85dB, in theory.

250 watts works nicely. I ran an SAX-100.2 on my pair for quite a while.
0.9 cubes is the 0.707 alignment with no poly stuffing. If you go larger you get a lower Qtc and need even less power to reach full excursion - it won't hurt to go a bit bigger if you want to.

The v.3 will be slightly deeper to make room for a basket with vent windows. Still only 5" deep.
Also moving to a rubber surround and fully insulated leads so customers have the option to use them as marine speakers.

Sonds like a nice driver, but won't fit where I need it :( Maybe a new Mag will work. Since I'm sure you have some experience with it, would it be comparable in SQ and output to my v2's. The Mag would be sealed in .5-.7 cubes, my V2's are sealed at .6 each. I have the sub channel of a Power 1000 available.
If I wished to use my current v2's in a home theater setup, what kind of alignment do you recommend?

The Mag is about 5.5" deep - the new BM, on the other hand, will be only about 3.5" deep or so - IIRC.
I have heard the new Mag already and it sounds fantastic. The new BM is still in prototype, but I hope to hear it in the near future :)
For HT I'd look into ~2.6 ft^3 tuned to ~25 Hz for the pair, that gives an F3 of about 24 Hz which would work nicely for movies and whatnot. You really won't need alot of power either - 200 watts each from a plate amp would do nicely, IMO.

I was actually coming back to fix my post to show the BM. I look forward to that.
So 1.3 each at 25hz, and low power is always a plus. I'll bust out the tape measure tonight. These could make for decent HT subs with good WAF if I do this right, and keep me a totally stealthed truck install, too. If you'll do a full class-D 5 channel with good output, I'll just start signing over paychecks :p

That's where I had mine, using them in the living room since I never installed them in my truck. They're fucking clean. They don't quite get as low as I would like in my LR, but in car, I expect they would have no issues. 200 watts is more than enough to drive them, and they remind me of hitting a concrete slab with a sledgehammer. A nice pop with no overhang, and no need for a bajillion watts.
Oh, I stuffed 3/4# of polyfill in each .6 cubes on mine.

Review posted by JimJ on SSA:
" First off, thanks to Jacob of Sundown Audio for letting me review this driver smile.gif
I always like listening to lower-power woofers in the 2-300W range, because these smaller drivers show that especially when musical accuracy is concerned, you don't need the multi-kW behemoths that are becoming commonplace these days. Just 300W and a small sealed enclosure is often times all you need to realistically reproduce most anything you can throw at it. For this review, I wired the voice coils for a combined 8 ohm load, with an Xover point of 50Hz @ 24dB/oct. The enclosure was slightly under 1cF, sealed.
Aesthetics:
You normally don't expect much in the way of build quality for subwoofers in the SD-1's price bracket. I was pretty surprised on opening the packaging therefore to see push terminals and a basket more substantial than a simple stamped design. Small things like this may not impact the sound of the driver - but not having to find and crimp quick disconnects to mate to the typical terminals you find on subs of this nature is a time saver and is appreciated. The mounting depth lends itself well to mounting in center consoles or other hidden locations.
What's to Like:
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
The plucked strings of "Betta Git It In Ya Soul" exemplifies why I love this album; Mingus' playing is superb and a good sub should resolve all the grit and soul of the bass itself. I thought the SD-1 did an admirable job, with a good transient attack and ability to dig surprisingly deep without calling attention to itself.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours (The Chain)
While the SD-1 didn't have the jaw-dropping command of this track that I experienced when I listened to the new Magnum, it's no slouch, either smile.gif The underlying bass line was tight and tuneful, with none of the bloat or lag that afflict inferior drivers. Overall volume was satisfying as well, any fears that I may have had about running out of undistorted output were soon ended with a flick of the volume knob.
Tift Merritt - Another Country (Something to Me, Broken)
I first heard Tift's new material live at MerleFest earlier this year, and while the acoustics weren't too great there, the studio versions are blissful exceptions to the current "loudness wars". This is not a place for a strong, overpowering subwoofer - it'll sound woefully out of place. The SD-1 provided all that was needed, and the overall effect got my foot tapping quite nicely. You really need to be able to enjoy these without thinking "Oh, that subwoofer sounds good" - the SD-1 allows you do to this easily in its recommended sealed alignment.
What's Not to Like:
With just a single 10", I felt as if large symphonic arrangements were slightly beyond the grasp of what the SD-1 could do cleanly. With more cone area to work with, I'm sure the individual drivers can handle it well, but with only one I don't think you'd be happy if your usual listening fare is heavy on Orff, Holst, or Tchaikovsky.
Overall, if you're looking for a small, unassuming subwoofer to play accurately on a budget, the SD-1 is a solid option. It's not a world-beater by any means, but it's an honest speaker that can be a welcome addition to a reasonable, lower-powered setup."
