on my amp racks? Keep in mind I suck at carpeting. And don't worry about the sub box, I'm building a new one next week. Also, I'll take any other suggestions you might have!

Carpet. No doubt.

Well, if I do paint it will be the flake stuff that matches the carpet in the trunk. That stuff is pretty forgiving and hides a lot of imperfections.

Paint? It chips.... more trouble than it's worth....

Nonbacked carpet... definitely....

Can you mount the amps vertical on either side of the sub box face?

[] O [] <------Like that?

Agreed, 77 works well with carpet, but for vinyl go with contact cement.

LOL... you must like vinyling a lot.... since if you use that stuff you're going to have to go back and re-do it a bunch of times when it starts to back-peel....

Contact cement....!!!!!

system 80 is the shit from 3m in a can...otherwise i agree contact type cement..

and no on the vinyl from me i would match the rest of the trunk... or maybe vinyl on the box with a little foam under it for a sunk in type look...

Nope, I have to allow space for the trunk hinges. I'm going to redo the spacers to try to get them more straight up and down. Good suggestion though!

Nope, I have to allow space for the trunk hinges.

From the picture, it looks like you have the space between the sub and the hinge. I have built something similer and just made cut outs for the hinges to fold into. Of course I am only looking at the photo...

Right now they actually slip in behind the amps. If I put them on the front of the sub box they will hit for sure. Also, I'm hoping to get the new box built next week and that should take up almost all of the room in the trunk! lol

Nope, I like vinyling just once....and on both of my enclosures it has stayed just fine. But thanks for the cement advice...but Grower beat you to it like a few posts ago

Have you thought about truck spray in bed liner? Just thought I would throw that out there. I had a buddy spray my chitty little ghetto rack and I like it a lot.

On those amp racks w/all the right angles? I've never been able to wrap vinyl around right angles, especially intersecting ones on sub boxes and amp racks. Any pointers?

I was trying to find a better picture, but this is all I have I guess..you see the rack on the back wall for the xovers and the distro blocks, that is vinyled. I used some really stretchable vinyl and just pulled it like no other. The corners came out beautifully! The door pods have even more corners and angles, thats where the heat strectchable vinyl really comes in handy!

oh forgot to add, one trick/tip is to roundover the edges with a router to get a slight curve, as that helps alot. I used a 3/4" roundover bit on it.

Look jerky, you gotta problem with my monkey feet?? Step off, you're just pissed because I can pick up a baseball with my feet.

I would stay away from the bedliners in a can. I tried a couple and they were bunk.

AG,

Thanks for the tip on the roundover bit. I just bought my first router+bench at Costco yesterday and am looking forward to learning this craft. I've been just using a jigsaw and they're horrid for any fine shaping or even precision cutting.

Do you mind telling me what stretchable vinyl brand you used? Is it SP's HF Vinyl or something you found at your local fabric shop?

local fabric shop, in the discounted sale rack. The nice thing about vinyl is you can change the color by using SEM Color Coat...

vinyl would look tacky as hell in that trunk.

matching carpet is definitely the only way to go. Id suggest positioning the boards so you can not see the backs. that will make the carpet job easier to hide. if that isnt an option, then carpeting two boards and facing them back to back will give you a front/back carpet job that should look great.

paint and vinyl will just give you that non-OEM "I-modified-my-own-trunk" look. especially when you have carpet available that will look fantastic, why would you consider vinyl or paint?

4 pages on finishing suggestions?

Honestly, your amp rack seems to be a big waste of trunk space. If it were my car I would build a false floor to mount the amps on. Its not that hard. If you can build a subwoofer box you can build an amp rack.

As for finishing, carpet is by far the easiest solution. Even if you mess it up it is very forgiving and hides blemishes very nicely. I think that spray on bedliner stuff would be the next easiest option. Vinyl is nice but it is difficult to stretch and you need to make sure everything is sanded smooth. I would use paint as a last resort for trunk work. It basically renders your trunk useless unless you have some sort of trim plate to put over it. If anything touches it (a suitcase, a soccer ball, etc) it will scuff, chip, or peal. You also need to add several layers of primer to your MDF before it is ready for paint.

I agree, if you can get the space for a false floor then do that. I plan to replace my test setup with a false floor design soon... Then carpet it is. BUT I am not opposed to paint if done right. Still round over the edges, seal with bondo, prime with sanding sealer, sand, prime with real primer and then lay the paint. There's some great paint out there that's quite durable. If properly applied it WILL NOT flake.

I agree with the others, anything but fabric just gives it that cheezy 16 year old i did it myself because i saw it like that in my magazine look.
