Default Alpine 7940/49 owners, step in...

I should be getting a 7940 in the mail soon. I have a ton of music ripped to FLAC via EAC from various CDs I borrowed from friends, family, etc...

The problem now is moving all of that music to my car. I CAN use the AiNET input as an AUX input and use my MP3 player playing FLAC, but I would prefer to not go that route for the time being...another option would be a CD changer, which WILL be in my future, but not for a while as I don't have the funds...

So to those Alpine owners, in your experienced what brand of CD-Rs have worked well for you? Anything special you would like to add? I will be burning using EAC once more so I would imagine that I may have more of a chance to play them on the Alpine...

Thanks for any help

It won't read cd-r. If ever it does...you were just lucky. It is so picky that sometimes it won't read bnew original cds.

I had a 7940 for years; loved it. Using a Plextor Ultraplex writer and Maxell Music CD-R (the gold label), I had no problems with home burned CDs. YMMV.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have actually heard of using Maxells before so that is a good sign...are these it?

http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-Music-7.../dp/B00006IAAN

They have them at other vendors for 10-20 bucks, which is perfectly reasonable for me...as long as I can play my tunes

If anyone has any other experiences please chime in

In my experience the 7940 is pretty good with most CD-R discs, I've used mostly Sony and Memorex and they all played fine as long as they were pretty new. It seems like discs that are more than a few months old are the ones I have problems with.

Never used a 7949 myself, but I've read that they are very picky.

One last point: as my 7940 got older, it got pickier about what CDs it would play, period. Seems like more of an alignment type issue, but can't be 100% sure. Some CD-Rs (different brands) it would just not play, period. Your deck may work just fine, but I would say move forward with caution, it's not a slam dunk. As much as I loved my old 7940, I probably wouldn't run another one today, because (IMO) any 10 yr old CD player would not be something I'd deem as "reliable" (from a tracking perspective) unless it was recently serviced.

BTW, I had the 7949...and also a 7939. They can't really read cd-r. I always had my lens replaced every year...a tech told me not to play cd-r's in it as it can cause lens failure...something related with the laser.

I applicate your comments...I am not hoping for it to become my permanent source, just something to hold me off before I find something better or I get the funds for something else (like a NAK )...

Guess the 7949 is more picky, did a little more searching and I do hear more about the 7949 having problems playing CD-Rs...thanks for your input...

------

I'll give it a go and see how it goes...I'm not too worried as I didn't pay an arm and leg for it, but I figure for the cost its the best I can do
