Default top 5 ways to process?

after the recent 'cabin gain' thread

given that 'cabin gain' is a reality, do we need a low fs?

and the NEED for processing,

im wondering if some of you that know every product available EVER could offer the rest of us some help.

in order of decreasing cost, but trying to only suggest quality products,

whats the most processing power we can have for,

(new or used) <- e bay

2.600+
3.300+
4.130+

The Alpine h701 is very useful, and has optical in. I just got one installed and it's great. A little difficult to use with only the 9861 to control it, I know many people like the C701 to control it.

Are there any head units with good x/o's and an eq?

DVA-9861 + H701, Focal 165K2P + TN52, Mpyre Audio 65M, Audiomobile MASS 12, Zed Gladius, Tidal Audio TP 1100.6

i think it's safe to say that you can get a pretty good 2-way plus sub deck in your dash for under $250 used and have processing that's good enough for most anything you'd want to do within certain limitations. 880prs, the alpine offerings, and i'm sure there's other good budget active units.

PPI DCX-730 if you can find one is a GREAT option. Only problem is the display is known to have issues on about 50% of models (mine does...). They can be found used from $200-300 depending on display.

Having both, prs880 and dcx730, I have to say 880 gets really close to 730.

I paid a total of 500$ for Behringer Dcx24/96 +Deq 24/96 + 12v power supplies.I have one of the first H700's paid 650 new in 2004, and there's no comparison other than the Alpine will do a four way and is not a rack mount piece so it's way smaller, it's not even close SQ or processing wise.

Of course, lets not forget the all out car PC and super sound card with software processing route that npdang used a while back. I believe he said he invested around $2k into it, but it had everything you could imagine a processor would do bar NONE. It was really the ultimate solution. I sold it on here for $900 i think.

I mean if you went with some used parts and pirated software (not condoning this, just saying...) then you could probably do that for around $1k but I haven't priced it out. If you can, I think thats the #1 option bar none.

I'll second the DCX 2496

For under $350 including the 12V power supply conversion, it can do an active 3 way, parametric eq on each channel, ta on each channel, crossover for each channel, and is very user friendly.

Well, don't discount HUs. The HU route is probably the best way to get processing in the car. It's tough to beat for the price, it's at your finger tips, and it doesn't take up any more real estate on the dash or anywhere else. 3-way active is doable as cheap as $200, and you have a wide selection of HUs for the $300 and under price range. For 4-way, you basically have the DRZ9255 and that's about it, and that comes in at around $650 and up generally. HU + processor routes do allow a greater mix of processing and EQing plus some expansion into 4-way and 5-way kinds of setups when you start splitting the duties between a very capable HU and very capable processor. You can also overlap x-over slopes and EQing and really are able to do pretty much anything under the sun. The downside is cost. You'll be sitting at a rather expensive price point when you start looking at the use of external processors along with probably not a cheapy HU. Depending on the mix, you might not have much more than some HUs with just 3-way control and some EQing power. It just makes the HU route alone more attractive at half or less of the price.

the DCX will do 6 channels. I use it for a 3 way front stage (woofer, mid, tweet) and the sub uses the amp's crossover. The sub's response is acceptable without any electrical eq, so I amp not concerned with it until I have some money to burn on a dedicated processor for it.

I honestly don't know the price of this bad-boy but it looks like a handy unit. I really don't know much about it and had considered starting a thread but figured I'd piggy back. It looks great, like an arc version of the Zapco DSP-6 but not quite as extensive.
