Default PIC'S-WuNgUn modified his SVT sub-box to fit a 10"er

I decide to re-use my audiophile (option) enclosure in my SVT Focus to fit my Aura-Sound NS10-513-4A 10" sub woofer...
Wanted to keep the trunk clean and semi-stealthy, so I figured this would be the best (and easiest) solution...

Here is the enclosure out of the car, with the 8" sub depression cut out...

I decide on using resin/glass-mat to seal the rear sub mount...which needed to be removed to fit the Aura...
It's 6 sheets thick, and at least as strong/rigid as the plastic.

...and here is the Aura sub. Bought it used from a guy over at DIY Mobile Audio.

Here is the Aura beside the stock 8 incher...

The manufacturer states that .65 cu./ft. is sufficient for a sealed enclosure...but the sub works even better in a ported, larger box...
I'll be feeding in 300 watts, so things outta be pretty tight and snappy.

I decided to go one farther with the SVT enclosure, and add some of my sound deadening material...

This is "gumbo"...basically, a rubberized, tar/cork adheasive. Super dense, sticky and easy to work with...

I also have 1/2" open-cell foam rubber padding...

It's pretty light weight and AWESOME at killing sound. I've used these materials thruout the car for deadening purposes, and it works great...

I decided not to eat up the interior space too much, so I limited the use of the padding...

The gumbo covers about 80% of the interior...
A little ring to seal the sub/enclosure.

I remember using this technique on the OUTSIDE of the enclosure when I was deadening the car, and the impovement from just that was quite astonishing. I guess it helped keep the sound waves from inefficiently vibrating the box, using up precious SPL that could be better using coming off the sub!

Isn't that enclosure a little flimsy for the output of that sub? Especially since its a small sealed enclosure. Seems like definition is gonna suffer from panel flexing at low frequencies and resonances at midbass frequencies sending that sound through the cone.

I'd at least try listening to it at volume outside the car to see if you can hear any box noises that you can't hear once installed since they would be attenuated by the trim panel but yet would affect the sound from within the box through the cone.

It's by no means flimsy...
Notice the cutout at the opening, how thick the plastic is? I think it's even thicker in other spots...
All the corners are nicely radiused internally and externally.
As well, it's internally ribbed, and there is a molded 'branch' between the front and rear...
And the fact that there are practically no right angles to it helps...
It's also mounted to the car in 5 different spots, and originally, the rear face was bolted to the sub magnet to also prevent panel flexing, effectivly joining the front face to the rear panel.
And I'm thinking the internal and external insulating will kill off most audible resonances...

But I'll give it a good listen on the living room floor to see how it goes...

Flimsy when you concider what a 10 sub inch in a .66 box with 300 watts can do? I'd say yes, if not no one tht makes quality boxes would make them out of MDF with bracing (what would be the point of the extra cost?).

But give it a try, It's free so it doesn't hurt.

Can you add fiberglass to the outside of an ABS enclosure?

If it sounds muddy, and I need to build a MDF box, it'll seriously test my woodworking skills if I plan on patterning it outta this one...

Sure, why not?
I scuffed up the ABS first with some 60 grit to help adheasion...

Great idea. I have always been curious about those subs. To this day have never heard one.

Pioneer 880, Kicker 850.4, Powerline CS's

take a piece of metal from an old sign that you have lying around and rivet/pl premium it to the outside of the box... this should take care of any resonance issues should you be suffering from 'panel flex' (which I somewhat doubt that looks like a solid little enclsure)
