This is an intro sale that will be open for a few weeks, by the way.

One picture not included above:

Back plate has gap vents and a pole vent, this little guy has some good thermal potential. This photo is from the prototype (chrome basket) - the production model black finish is smoother as well, as you can see from the new photos.

Nice looking woofer Jacob. How do you think this would do as a dedicated midbass?

Efficiency is a bit low for that - as it was optimized as a true subwoofer driver. It also won't like to be played much over 200 Hz.

Basically, if as low as you want to go is mid-bass it's not really optimized for that. It will work fine up to 200 Hz but may not be the *best* choice as a mid-bass driver.

2 questions:

What is the VC config?
Is that rubber gasket around the mounting holes removable?

How do these fair in IB?

They model out with a ~55 Hz F3 point. Power handling will go down mechanically, obviously.

They seem like a god candidate but I'm sure Jake will chime in soon enough :)

When testing them before shipment I do so with around 120 watts free-air on my bench to make sure they are okay... I do run a quick burst around 200 watts or so too, to make sure the spider stays glued down. But the actual power handling IB is going to be 100-120 watts or so to get full excursion.

~80 dB - being that they are optimized for really low frequency duty a high sensitivity with such a low cone area is not an option.

I put two, ported, in my Dad's truck yesterday :)

Pretty good result both sound-wise and output-wise. I'm tempted to go meter it *laughs*

Sounds quite good on his typical classic rock music... mid-bass needs serious help to blend, though, as the other speakers are still stock. That is the next step!

These drivers look really good! I modeled the specs last night in WinISD and they seem pretty perfect for what I wanting to do. Where might I purchase these E8's?

BTW, My name's Shane and I live in Houston. I'm wanting to install 4 of these in a sealed downfiring box for my '99 Dodge Ram Reg cab. SQ is my goal before SPL.

Pleasure to be a member and meet you all!

Not sure about small sealed, but these E8's perform EXTREMELY well IB. I will have a better review of them IB, don't worry.

would you put these at the top of your IB list?

I need more time with them before I can make that claim. But as of right now I can say that they would be at least tied with the CMASS.

Pretty exciting to hear that you feel so good about them :) Especially considering the price point.

Now, if only I didn't sell out so quickly! I am waiting on parts to re-build the units that did not pass my QC testing - so I may not have any more until then (yes, I am testing each on individually), unfortunately.

Ya man, I wasn't sure what to expect. It's really hard to tell until you get'em in. I am thoroughly impressed. I will give it a few more weeks to really hear them then throw up an single review on them. I will also compare them to the rest and a few others that I am still going to be testing. I just don't drive the Altima that much anymore because of gas prices so it may take a bit longer than I, and you would like.

Right now its running in my Alti off an 800prs + a Memphis line driver on the sub channel to an MTX 2300x.

Initially I was very impressed with the tonality and the output. It played various notes with authority. It's meant to be crossed (at least in my application) at 80 hz, anything higher and I recieved a lil breakup in the output. I am reallllly enjoying these subs with all kinds of music, rock/rap/country. They are doing a great job!

SQ: 8
Power handling: 9
LFE: 10
Output: 9
Build Quality: 10
Total: 46

These are just preliminary numbers, I will post more when I am done with a few weeks of listening time. They are DEFINATELY a competitor to the CMASS in overall sound and output! I am VERY impressed, especially at this price point.

More about other 8's I've ran and tested IB here: http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/showthread.php?p=466762#post466762

Jake...are these all sold out already? I wanted to pick up a few. How long before more become available?

Unfortunately, yes, all A-Stock E8s are sold out. I didn't even get to keep any for my own car!

I have quite a few that failed my QC testing and they will be re-built with entirely new parts in about 4 weeks time - give or take a week. The reason for failure of QC was tinsel lead slap, so the new units will all have tied down tinsel leads to avoid any possibility of such an occurrence.

I was very picky with them... and unless they passed ~150-175 watts free air (actual clamped power) without tinsel lead slap they went to the QC failed stack. So all of the E8s that shipped out were the best of the best units, all others simply did not ship.

The tolerance for the lead exit height on the cone on these was pretty tight, so the E8s will carry tied down leads from now on to avoid any chance for mistake on the part of the build house. It may add a few dollars to the end user but I suppose it will be worth it to not have so many drivers fail my QC inspection.

Can't believe I missed this. Saw the thread with the protos on another forum, and was waiting for release.

Any of the rebuilt b-stock available yet? Any chance you'll have a new run any time soon?

sundownz
07-24-2008, 05:42 PM
I should have parts soon to re-build these.

I changed the lead design to tied down style, as lead slapped was the cause of all of the failed QC units. Also went with a slightly higher profile surround that doesn't "cup" at all at full excursion... parameters are pretty much exactly the same, just a few tweaks.

Once I start taking care of the QC failed units I'll get another run started as these turned out to be much more popular than I thought.

Little update... until I get more, Mike Bruno will be re-building and re-selling the QC failed units. These will be supported by Mike, and not Sundown since the workmanship will be all his:

http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=340607

60 + shipping with the new improved spiders w/ tied down leads and taller roll surround.

Mike is very experienced with speaker building and sells custom woofers quite often, so I have faith in his work.

I will open up pre-ordering on the next run shortly... they have a few changes:

1) Tied down tinsel leads, so no possibility for slap that caused some of the previous models to fail QC testing
2) Taller / slightly thicker foam surround

Specs are roughly the same :)

After that they will become regular "dealer" items, so it will be the last chance to get this offer.

sundownz

same price?

Single woofer price will be the same... I will have to pull back a bit on bulk discounts as the tied down leads cost me quite a bit more.

Once I get confirmation that they are on the way I will make a new thread to pre-order the new ones... ETA is about 4 weeks once they have left the build house.
