Default 56k = bad mmkay | 08 Rigeline 4-shallow clarions, hertz 3way front stage

Custom fiberglass enclosure

4 - pfw1051 shallow mount clarion subwoofers
1 - clarion DPX1151
1 - max685BT headunit
1- hertz 6.5" 3way front stage with dome mid (passive)
1 - hertz coaxial

The project today is a custom fiberglass enclosure, vented, for four shallow mount clarion 10" subwoofers. I utilized a round port for ease of construction.

The design philosophy was an 'a-b insert' design where the front goes into a rear/side carrier, sealed and seamless. Here are some pictures so far.

Picture one is the frame. The 1/8ish on either side of 'b' is for material allowance as I wrap and glass the front (two layers) then finish up the underside with five more layers.

Picture two is of 'b' wrapped in grille cloth and slathered with resin/mekp. I mixed this batch a little hot. To cover this piece I used roughly 200 ml of resin and was left over with just a tad. The recess in the front of 'b' will be covered with a grille so the ports are not exposed. More pictures to come.

Is that going behind the rear seat? In the space between the center seatbelt tensioner and right side (passenger)?

No. The enclosure will be located underneath the rear seat. The area behind the seat (where the factory 'subwoofer' resides) will be used for amp storage. That is the only part of the system design I don't like as the seats don't easily fold down. I will break the system in, tune it, and then replace the rear seats and hope my nature doesn't require me to tweak the gains

Originally, I had intended to go with 2x 10" shallows with the amps mounted into the box.. but then 'twofootitis' (I am into boats too) kicked in and four it is

As far as the ridgeline goes... super nice vehicle to install in. There is literally nothing in the way of strange contours under the rear seat, a perfect location for a subwoofer enclosure I would have to say. I got 'b' glassed last night and the filler is sitting on it waiting to harden, which due to the temp and the humidity is taking a little longer than usual.

Only tough part is getting speaker wire in the drivers door.

So true. I have to get 1 12ga. set and 2 14ga sets in there! That will be the biggest chore job of the electrical portion of the install.

Could you just put the crossover in the door, if you're running passive? All those wires will DEFINITELY be a problem. Can't wait to see progress on the sub enclosure.

I thought about that. The only perspective problem I see is moisture. What do you think about that? I have put the crossovers in the door in the past. There are plans for a 9255 as well for T/A so eventually there will need to be three sets in the doors. I have to confess. I didn't take a super close peek at the molex, but I thought there was some room in them for some extra pins. If not, I'm not adverse to adding another grommet.

progress on the box.

Well, it's been glassed, trimmed and sanded, and sanded, and sanded. The pictures below include one of 'b' visiting 'a' (the mdf frame) and a sneak peak at the final fit.

Picture 1.
- the insert. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the glassing and sanding process because canon doesn't like dust and we've been there before. Anyways, it has been laminated, filled and glayzed (which will need to be done again directly before paint) The port opening (which will be covered by a grille) (mmmm grille) is being formed and prepped for guess what... more sanding...

Picture 2.
- A little teaser

Also finished the mid/tweeter pods for the front door. I will update the front stage all in one go.

Really nice install, I've always wondered how low and loud shallow mount subs get. How do you think they sound?
