Default Re: help crossover smoking

#1. Always have a WORKING Fire Extinguisher standing by when doing any work on your vehicle, whether audio- or mechanic-related! I know it seems like overkill, but it just takes that one time, that one accident, to ruin your day and possibly more! I've seen it happen! Don't take the chance.

#2. Disconnect the Negative Terminal on your vehicle battery. Yes, you may lose some of your memory settings, etc!

#3. Check all of your wiring and connections from the amp, to the crossover, and from the crossover to the Tweeters. Make sure none of the wires are pinched creating an electrical short-circuit and that the terminals/connections on the tweeter are not touching anything metal creating a short-circuit when mounted as well.

#3. What Speaker Set Brand/Model do you have? Were they purchase new? Do you have the Manual? Does the Crossover have a Tweeter Protection Circuit?

#4. What Amplifier Brand/Model do you have?

#5. If you have a portable iPod/MP3/CD player, get a stereo miniplug that will fit it and connect it to the Tweeter leads (Disconnect the Wires that go to the Tweeter from the Crossover, and connect them to the stereo miniplug.) Then turn on your Portable player and adjust the Volume to Minimum. Plug the stereo miniplug that's connected to the Tweeter into the Player and play a song. While you are within 12" or so of the Tweeter, Slowly turn up the Volume on the Player (if you hear music or sound, do not turn it up very loud or you may damage the Tweeter further!) If you don't hear any sound from the Tweeter, it is Blown (the voice coil is damaged). If the sound is scratchy or distorted, the voice coil is damaged but not completely burnt out...you will need to replace the Tweeter. If the sound is clear, your Tweeter is good! You will need to check the Crossover, Wiring, and Amplifier.

#6 If all of your wiring checks out okay you may have just had a defective tweeter, or that particular amp channel might have decided to give out and sent a pure DC Voltage to the Crossover & Tweeter.

There are too many variables and unknowns regarding your system setup to help you further. Let us know as much info as possible so we can try to help you solve the problem safely and easily. You Do Not want to start a fire in your trunk or anywhere else!
