Me and my wife spent my weekend deadening up my doors and installing my mb quart discus components. We completely stipped the interior and put it under the carpet and all that fun stuff. I snapped some quick pictures of the doors, it is amazing the difference you can tell, this is the first car I have sound deadened and I will never do without again. All parts of the door have at least 3 layers. the big holes that were in it have like 6 layers over them.

we also used carpet padding behind the speaker... I used two layers of half inch stuff. The different densities of the bits of materials in it seems to break up the standing waves really and helps out a lot at high volumes.

What is that you used on the doors?

It is some stuff I picked up at lowes that was 70 bucks for 108 sq ft. It is in their roofing department and it is very similar to dynamat. It is an asphalt/butyl mix I think. The asphalt products I have used before didn't adhere nearly this well, and it would droop in the heat, but this stuff sticks like there's no tomorrow and it loves the heat like fat kids love cake and just sticks even better. Here's some updated pictures, we ended up using all 108 sq ft :) You can click on them to see jumbo pics.

This is the tiny little strip of sound deadening GM put on at the factory... thanks gm!

And that's the extra I put on... a little more effective.

This shows a couple different colors of the deck. It has three sets of 5 volt pre outs, a seven band eq, high and low pass 12db crossovers, motorized faceplate with three tilt settings and 7000+ pretty colors which is what my wife likes about it.

Another picture of the door... I think we might have added more deading, I'm not sure, we have so many layers on the doors it is silly.

The rear deck will have mb quart 5x7's in it, I am one of those weirdos that like rear fill, sorry.

The trunk will be getting another 1 or two layers of deadening before the subs go in. I plan on running 3 Elemental Designs 13kv.2's.

How's the smell with that deadener?

It's Grace Ice & Water ShieldŽ (http://www.na.graceconstruction.com/product.cfm?mode=c&did=8&id=63#3379) . Grace Ultra is the Butyl underlayment they make. Did you waterproof the foam in the doors?

no, I didn't waterproof the foam, but I have the grace ice and water shield on the outer door skin too, so there is no way it will cause rust.

You could end up with funky smells though if that padding starts to mold inside the doors.

Water will get in the door from the seals at the bottom of the window (think rubber with a felt lining is not the most waterproof seal in the world) as well as from the drain holes at the bottom (when you are driving down the highway at 70 mph in the rain, water cane make it's way up there).

Moist dark and warm is a recipe for mold/fungus. And it will defnintely start smelling before too long.

I was asking about the asphalt odor and if so how long it lasts.

it isn't that bad, it isn't a strong smell by any means. Easily covered up by an air freshener or some febreeze on the seats and carpet and not even smellable with all the panels back on. No regrets at all about using this stuff.

Good work! I commend you on not using commercially available car audio deadener and doin' it in the spirit of DIY. I personally think the mark-up on car audio deadening material is ludicrous. Although I regrettably used them. If I can find a local manufacturer of asphalt/butyl based damping material, I'd definitely use 'em instead.
