Alright here are some good pictures of my midranges and tweeters reverse mounted in the kick panels. Did this using several holesaws, a 2 7/8 to score the groove for the grill, a 2 9/16 to provide the opening, and a 1 1/2 for the tweeter. The tweeter is held in with foam spacers and sound deadening material, and the midrange is held in with its 4 bolts, the way it would attach to the faceplate.

Here are the pictures, with a before pic for comparison

That looks good.

Ya I'm loving the looks of this compared to the big flange that could not even fit on my kick panels. Also the closer driver spacing between the midrange and tweeter made a large improvement in the quality of the sound. Now I just need to find some doorpanels so that I can make the 8's look good.

That looks nice, How do they sounds mounted off axis like that? I would be worried someone would kick my tweeter in that location. Would it hurt to make custom grills for the tweets?

Actually the tweeters being exposed isn't a problem. They are extremely small... offset by the 1/8" of horn loading, and the dome is extremely flexible and durable. Wouldn't really be worth the effort to make grills for them, and it would probably end up looking worse and maybe affecting the sound negatively, because of the horn loading.

Oh forgot to answer the first question, they sound great off axis, height is equal if not better than when I had dash mounted tweeters, but the staging is much more coherent. When I had my tweeters dash mounted the stage would wander left and right, but not it is a solid center. I attribute the height to the great off axis response of both drivers and the close driver spacing, mainly because that is one of the things that improved slightly when I was able to space them more closely together.

I take it you removed that huge mounting plate from the front of the rs52an right?

What differences do you notice with the reverse mounting? It looks very clean, very nice work.

What are your crossover freqs?

Hmm.. Are you going to leave that gaping square hole on your door panel? The kicks looks nice but the door panel looks like it got raped!

Now I just need to find some doorpanels so that I can make the 8's look good.

Those door panels have been through about 3 different sets of speakers... and they were in pretty bad shape when I bought the car. One of these days I'll go around some junkyards and see if I can find some good ones so I can make them look good.

The only differences in sound with reverse mounting have to do with how close the tweeter is to the midrange, so basically off axis response around the crossover frequency. In this regard it made a large difference for the response of the drivers side drivers, because they are so off axis. When I had the mounting flange on the midrange I could only position the tweeter so close.. and it caused some issues with the response around 3600hz, where I have them crossed over at 24db/oct. At the low end I have it crossed at ~600hz 24db/oct. Oh and thanks for the compliments on the work.
