Nice-ass car audio equipment is nothing without some good music to pop in. I thought I'd share my current musical tastes and try and expand my horizons. I know there aren't many people here, but hey I like this board.
This thread is about the Thievery Corporation/Portishead school of slightly subdued electronic music, with trippy repetitive melodies that build up and get improved upon but never get too excited.
Also the Ninja Tune/DJ Krush school of sampled beats and turntablism and trippiness. Breakbeats that catch you off guard and make you want more. Experimental is good.
These two genres blend a lot, so I'll name some artists of both:
Portishead
Thievery Corporation
DJ Cam
The Nothing
Bonobo
Cafe Del Mar
Boozoo Bajou
Thunderball - This Girl
Scorn - Evanascence (album)
DJ Zeph
LTJ Bukem
Kid Loco
and
Herbalizer
DJ Shadow
DJ Krush
DJ Q-Bert
Coldcut
Rob Swift
Keep 'em coming.

In the former category, check out Zero 7 (http://www.zero7.co.uk/). They're a British band that doesn't seem to get much recognition in the US, though they're tapped occasionally for movie (e.g. Garden State) and TV (e.g. the West Wing) soundtracks. They're a neat fusion of trip-hop, soul, and jazz/funk.
Also, the first two words to pop into my mind when I think of trip-hop are Massive and Attack. :)

Oh Schit I forgot to list Massive attack. Duh. :foreheadslap:
Yeah I listen to Zero 7 too, a lot lately since I'm doing stereo work and they make a system sound sooooo good. Didn't seem to fit the genre though.

One of my personal favourites: Layo & Bushwacka - Deep South (http://mp301.epitonic.com/streamed/files/reg/songs/mp3/Layo_And_Bushwaka-Deep_South.mp3)
Right-click and "save as". Links to Epitonic :)

CoB? I haven't heard any of them, or dark tranquility... but if they're anywhere near the same league as Opeth or In Flames, I am all over that shit like stink on poop.

Yep Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity sang on In Flames' first album Lunar Strain and Anders Fridén of In Flames sang on Dark Tranquillity's first album Skydancer. Also Mikael Stanne played guitar and IIRC did the clean vocals on Skydancer.
If you dig In Flames you should check out Dark Tranquillity and At The Gates. DT and ATG are better IMO. I really only like the first two In Flames albums and first two EP's... the newer stuff is horrible IMO. Dark Tranquillity I like everything up to the last two albums (which are ok at best). Everything At The Gates has is good. Also you might want to check out The Haunted (former At The Gates members) and Mors Principium Est, both have that Swedish sound and very thrashy.
To keep this thread on topic I like some trip hop. I would like to hear more. Massive Attack is cool. I like DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo - Ki-Oku a lot... it's very jazzy. I also like Baxter's self titled debut and Sneaker Pimp's debut. Anyone know of any Jazzy trip hop with a lot of jazz instruments (trumpet, sax, double bass, etc.) but with trip hop beats?

You guys who are into slow metal should check out Neurosis' album Times of Grace.

That Neurosis album is amazing! Probably my favorite one. If you like Neurosis and kinda lighter stuff you should check out Steve Von Till's (one of the guitarist/vocalists from Neurosis) solo album If I Should Fall To The Field.. it's very good folkish/countrish (it's good I tell ya!) but very doomy and eerie feeling it's hard to describe. It also has very good SQ. =D

Lol, I'll check that out. Is it the one with the big white bird as the album art? I think I saw it once in a store years ago.
I used to know the drummer for Neurosis, Jason Roeder, and I only bought that stuff to check out what he played. I was also into punk, so I got their first album Pain Of Mind (1987). Good old-school punk, with some cool artwork inside.
Anyway, not to hijack my own thread. : P For some subdued triphop, try downloading these:
Boozoo Bajou - YMA
Yonderboi - Fairy of the Lake
|Tch0rT| If you want something with jazz instruments, go out and buy the Death in Vegas album "Dead Elvis." Ninety percent chance you won't be disappointed.

I'm very partial to Zero 7, Air, Lemon Jelly, Theivery Corporation, but also like Orb (Little Fluffy Clouds is a good one), Kruder and Dorfmiester are awesome as well. I like to sit around alot and just listen to Groove Salad on Winamp Radio, when i'm at home.

I find myself when i relax or just surfing the net listeing alot to ambient chillout music. Stuff like groovesalad i can never get tired of.
I just wish i could mix the songs and such as well as they do, because its basically like one huge long song then burn them onto a cd.
Epitonic.com is a good site but i wish they had more music like the above genre, i find mosty extreemly ambient material on that site.

Okay guys, download Mad Blunted Jazz by DJ Cam. It's track 3 on an album by the same name. Although if you want to just buy the album, it's worth the $11.

Portishead
One of my top 4-5 'bands' of all time. Amazing considering they only have 2 studio releases and a live album (and the dvd). Beth Gibbons sings with such heartbreak and emotion I don't see how anyone could not be affected by her vocals. All the other background 'stuff', most of which is very moody, is great, too. Now, if only a reunion were in the works...

You might want to check out some Groove Armada, I'm not exactly sure what type of dub your referring to, but check out Israel Vibration, if your looking for something more reggae check out King Tubby, or Scientist.
1st post woot!

Kosheen is great. I love Zero 7's stuff and Kosheen's music is just a touch more uptempo.
