Wanting to see how it would be like to have a 3" driver on-dash, I set out to experiment by cannibalizing my beloved PC sound system's satellite speakers.
They are the pretty well-regarded klipsch GMX satellites, opening them up reveals that the 4-ohm 3" driver is connected directly, wheareas the tweeter has a 3.3uf capacitor connected, a 1st order high pass at 12khz i believe
Doesnt matter, I tore off the little crossover board and ran them active from my pioneer p880rs. The pods fit rather okay on my dash, and I must say they do sound pretty decent and helped raise the soundstage higher than previously. Another interesting initial observation is that I never bothered with the timing alignment function before, but now that the midrange is on-dash, the soundstage was a little muddy, but after tweaking the TA I am able to get back the focused soundstage again..
for now, my crossover settings are
tweets hipass: 10Khz, slope 12db, phase inverted
mids lowpass: 5khz, slope 12db, phase normal
mids hipass: 250hz, slope 12db, phase normal
bass (seas p18rnx) lowpass: 125hz, slope 12db, phase inverted
