Black Label Society, Monster Magnet and Fu Manchu have been a few of my favorites lately.

Not on the hard side:
Led Zeppelin (try one of their greatest hits albums)
Aerosmith
Fuel
Incubus
Sublime
I love the last 4 tracks on the new Shinedown CD
Guns N Roses
Matisyahu (Reggae) - Love him!

Harder side
Linkin Park (my favorite but I think their recordings stink!)
Old Metallice (First two or three albums)
Rage Against the Machine
Disturbed

These are just some ideas. I find that most rocks albums are recorded horribly but I will be the first one to admit that I am not always right.

For softer stuff maybe try the Police, Phil Collins, or even an acoustic album like that from Alice in Chains. Hope this helps!

Lotta good bands listed already. Chevelle and Dark New Day are very good also.

With the exception of Holywood I like the recording quality of Marilyn Manson's stuff. He's a stickler. Korn has some good recordings also but pretty squashed up. For old school Back In Black is punchy and had been around the audiophile/studio engineer circle.

The problem these days is everybody is in a volume war. Back in black proves that an album can be punchy and yet loud. There's a few mastering engineers that love the Korn Untouchables Album as they feel it's the pinnacle of how absolutely dense an album can be with volume but still retain a FEELING of dynamics. I tend to agree, not only that but Kron and Manson get HUGE low end, Korn is rumbly and Manson just thumps but is clean and fast esp in Mechanical Animals.

I remember disliking the sound and production of Korn's Untouchables, but it's been a while since I listened to it because I don't like it anywhere near as much as the other albums (esp the 1st, 4th, and 6th albums). IIRC all of Korn's album are clipped on the CD. Which could explain why I've never gotten really any of their albums to sound good on any system I've had. They've always sounded muddy in the mid bass/lower mid range and a lack of high end bite in the guitars (but that's probably due to the downtuned guitars). I could be wrong though... I thought there was a web site simular to this one : http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm
But mentioned Korn's recording's as being clipped and devoid of dynamic range...

I'm sure part of Korn not sounding quite right is the guitar tones they get. They do some funky stuff, some sounds too hard to distinquish one note from the next. Their 1st few cd's had some weak low end, but the latest ones hit hard. But I've always thought I'd like them even more if some of the recordings were done a little different.

If someone likes some wicked, lowest tuned guitar riffs I've ever heard, check out http://www.meshuggah.net/ That stuff is midbass mad :D

Hell yeah Meshuggah is sweet! Though the original poster probably won't like it (same with most of Derek's suggestions) due to the screaming vocals. It's hard to find good metal with out the screaming vocals. It's usually death, black or doom metal that has the good stuff musically IMO. Power Metal has clean vocals but they are the horrible wanna be opera-ish high pitched the singer has been casturated kind. Here's a little list :

newer Katatonia (Discouraged Ones and after)
newer Paradise Lost (Icon and after I believe)
Dredg (I've only heard Catch Without Arms though)
Porcupine Tree
Criteria - En Garde
Eagles Of Death Metal
Winds
mid era My Dying Bride (The Angel And The Dark River through 34.788%...Complete after that they went back to clean singing and growls)
Reverend Bizarre - Harbringer Of Metal
The Mars Volta
Anathema (The Silent Enigma and after)

That's about all I can think of at the moment... I can think of tons others that have screaming, growling, a combination of those and some that have those and clean singing.

I will double check the album title if I can find that site again, I could very well be wrong :) They aren't really clipped they DO hit hit FS often though and many meters are calibrated to show overs at -1dB FS. Load it up in soundforge or protools and check it out.

Waves L2 ultramaximizer the beginning and end of audio as we knew it :)

I can drop some names in this thread. They're not all the same:

Neurosis (see triphop thread  )
Mayhem
Rammstein. Right now I'm cranking tracks 11 and 12 on Live aus Berlin, it makes you feel like you're right there (in Berlin, I guess).

My current favorite band is edenbridge (http://www.edenbridge.org/newsite/start-eng.htm); the lead singer is a female with incredible range and tone. No screaming. You'll really test the limits of your system, esp the lower midbass since the kickdrums are amazing.

Also check out therion. Good stuff, some growling but when they do it you don't really need to know what they are saying.

I didn't mention Nightwish because I'm not overly fond of them. I can only take the opera vocals for so long. They are ok though. Out of the female fronted metal bands I like Within Temptation and The Gathering the best. After Forever and Epica are pretty good though.
