View Full Version : Alpine XT19 derivative on PacParts
Surprised I hadn't seen this here yet (maybe I missed it in my search), but the Alpine version of the XT19 ring radiator from the SPX-107R/137R/177R is now listed as "in stock" on pacparts and other Alpine parts sites:
link (http://www.pacparts.com/model.cfm?CFID=767269&CFTOKEN=85991391&mfg=ALPINE&model_id=SPX177R&row_start=1&src_model_id=spx&action=list_part)
I bought a used set of these from someone here last year and love them, but don't have any of the mounting hardware (flush mount cups, clips, etc.). Anyone want to try a set of these and tell me if they come with the accessories? My guess was not, given what they list for previous components. Anyway, seems like a great tweeter for $28/pr.

wow for the price of the tweeters and mids you could but a full set and get everything including hardware and crossovers.. im still thinking about giving the full set a try but ive not heard anything good about the mids.. a lot of people like the tweets.. now are these the newer style larger ones that come with the grey coned type x or the older ones that came with the blue coned ones?? the new ones according to alpine web site and others are supposed to be larger than the old ones..??

Anyone have any idea how these tweeters compare to DLS UR1s? (The ultimate series tweeters, not the iridium series)

isn't 2 x Fs usually the standard.
solacedagony
01-02-2007, 09:25 AM
I dunno if these are anything like the XT25s, but according to Zaph, you shouldn't cross the XT25s below 2.5Khz @ 24db/oct or 3Khz @ 12db/oct.
I just ordered a pair myself to check out.

Only for ease of crossing over, because then you can (in general, and if you're not too picky) ignore the tweeter/box ("chamber") low-end rolloff in designing your crossover. A more sophisticated approach is to design crossovers based on the SPL limits of each driver and measured FR.
Would I use a .75" tweeter (with smaller Sd than a regular dome) and essentially no stroke below 4kHz or so? Not likely. At least, not unless it were waveguide-loaded.

agreed, I wasn't saying 2x Fs was the best/only/optimal, just that 2x Fs is generally the 'minimum'
CBRworm
01-02-2007, 10:16 AM
I believe that in general the 2x fs rule is pretty close, but from what I understand these particular speakers have some nasty resonances at about 1/2 fs that require that essentially no signal get to them much below fs. My personal experience with the alpine xt19 was that 3.6k worked pretty well. When I had it matched with my IR3 mids, the higher I crossed it the better. I could not cross it low enough to mate well with my door mounted 6.5's
It's a nice overall package. It has better high frequency extension than the DLS IR1 that I use, good size, good price. It needs to be aimed pretty carefully compared to a regular dome. Every once and a while I consider replacing my IR1's with them, primarily so my car won't look rigged with those big DLS tweets sticking out of the sail panels.

So do they suck off axis?
Chad
CBRworm
01-02-2007, 11:43 AM
They are pretty directional, but not as bad off axis as the XT25.
I'm a big fan of the XT19 and XT25 - but to me they both have to be pointed at your head. If they are installed right they sound awesome, what I have found is that if they are not both aimed correctly one will sound louder than the other. In my install I have both tweeters pointed at the drivers head.
In my mind I see these tweeters as spotlights, and other small domes as floodlights.
Thanks for the info! I certainly need more of a wider dispersion in my situation.

I think the top end dispersion is excellent on the xt19, as well as the low end extension. Certainly as good up top as the morel mt-22/23's I used to own, if not a bit smoother. The low end is great as well, but should still be crossed somewhat high at 3khz or so as these aren't very robust.

They do not have the bold umph! of the Seas and I think the off-axis response is not as good. BUT, I love the sound of the XT19 for some reason. They sound silky sweet, more detailed then the fabric neo tweets that I have heard, and not one bit of harshness (mine are hi-passed at 5,000Hz @ 6dB). I did like the Seas 27s Alums but they had a slight edginess to them (either that or reflections from my install).
I am not sure what hardware they come with but the ones I have right now have a swivel mount so the off-axis issue is not too much of a problem and they are the most compact tweeters that I have owned.

Yeah, I can definitely sense the better top end dispersion. I think most of my problems are install related as I have yet to get a dash mat and mount the tweeter to a baffle  . I have the XT19s aimed slightly off-axis/center/crossed with front driver/passenger heads. With the Seas I used the opposite window reflection trick. They were just too fatiguing to listen to on-axis.
npdang
01-03-2007, 07:48 PM
Not saying this is your install, but I do find alot of times people have the tweeter level way too high to compensate for a lack of top end dispersion which does make the tweeter sound quite harsh and peaky. The worst is when mounting the tweeter behind a stock panel, where often times there's huge peaks/dips in the response.
For examply my lpg's had absolutely no top end in the stock dash locations, and I found there were huge peaks around 3-5khz that probably made it sound far worse than it normally does. Or when I used to run Scan d2904/6000-1's I would boost the treble so high to get more air and I'd have to compensate by crossing the driver over very high in order to keep it from sounding too aggressive.
I think the only tweeter I wasn't able to tame were the Focal kevlars... just sounded harsh no matter what I seemed to do.

Actually, I noticed that I like eq'ing the tweeters down at top. Maybe it's the tweeters I've been using. I also make it a point not to have anything in the field between me and the drivers.
I might have thought that the Seas have better off axis response because I already had the 16.4KHz eq'd down when I installed the XT19?

The tweeter mounting hardware specifically for this Vifa XT19 tweeter in the current SPX line is discontinued by Alpine. And I don't believe it is interchangeable with the previous SPX (177A) line either -- different P/Ns (Alpine typically uses the same hardware P/N's if they fit with multiple products).
This tweeter is interesting but from the user experiences above, it has too narrow of a dispersion and higher x-over point for my tastes. And it looks to be a pain in the ass to fabricate angle mounts if you don't have the flushed or surface swivel mounts.

Depends on how loud, and your tolerance for non-linear distortion. I plan to cross it over at 3.5khz, 4th order. You maybe able to go as low as 2.5khz with a steep slope, but there is definitely a sharp rise in distortion below 3khz as output is increased.

I believe the XT19's are listed as 4ohm and polk's are also, not sure what actual is, but since it is fluid with music, hopefully it will be close enough to not cause a problem.
ocuriel - Thanks, I think for $26 would be worth it, now if they would just list as "in stock" I would be set

If they dont, would someone here be kind enough to buy me a pair and send them to me ?

I am currently running polk DB 6500's and was thinking about changing the tweeter because it is a bit bright/harsh. I would still be using my passive crossovers and they have no attenuation. Polk doesn't give any real specs, other than 4ohms and crossed over around 4000.
I am looking to get something softer and smoother as a temp until I can go active.
Any thoughts? I was thinking the lower sensitivity would attenuate them a bit. I have my H/U at -4 10khz

paid for my pair. they have a significantly lower DC resistance than the MD100 and the impedence curve of the Vifa version is lower as well at the XO point of the dyn passives so I'm assuming the filter will shift high enough. It's temporary but I'm crossing my fingers for good results.

Just got one of the 4 I purchased, the other 3 on their way. These buggers are tiny. They certainly appear well built.
As far as the mounting hardware, anybody know the part number for it? Or are we kind of on our own?

Damn, i just got my tweets in the mail today. took about 2 days to ship. i can't believe how small these are, i thought they were 1"?
Nope, 3/4" and cute:p
I've been toying with one a little bit off a laptop speaker out(SB Audigy 2) playing full range plus hooking it up to my bro's ED EDi6500 set. I bought two pairs, one for a replacement to his tweeters. Full range, these suckers are smooth and full. There's a lot of depth, no real noticable dips or peaks. I don't really get much of a sense of crispness though, no bite. It really seems like a very pleasant tweeter, very usable, decent off-axis performance. It'll be nice once I get these installed and under some actual power. My bro's EDi6500 tweeter is so different, lol, rolls off a good deal earlier, more crispness, detail, but the response isn't flat. The sensitivity of the XT19 tweeter is pretty low too in comparison. I think Alpine listed specs at 86dB? This was noticable when paired to my bro's EDi6500 woofers, with the +3dB setting on the x-over being just enough.
Now I'm going to have to pull out one of my Scans and see how they compare side by side, lol.

for me I thought it was reasonable. It came in 2 days, from DHL from cali to NJ. Shipping for 2 day on something like that is usually more. So I think its reasonable.

They stiil have them, and I just got me another set (set #2 - so far). TOO GOOD not to have a spare set around. I like them much better than the 60001's (which I got from them couple years ago).
I have them on axis in Boston Acoustics housings amd they are BLILLIANT. No complains about output or "too silky" like some have said. They are on BA crossovers w/ BA mids and a tiny JL e2150 behind.

I just finally picked up a pair of these, so I'll throw in my .02
GREAT tweets. INSANE value. got mine for around $38 shipped from PacParts - no mounting hardware - and put them in today.
They replaced the alum. domes from my Infinity Kappa set. I'm running them off the front channels of my Arc 4150-CXLR through an Audio Control 2XS X-over (3300Hz HP/LP @ 18dB/Oct) and they sound GREAT!!!!
I had to gain up my amp quite a bit from where the kappas were, but these are nice, smooth tweets. The vocals in my music seem much more centered and prominent than they ever were before, can't say enough about these little gems.
Probably gonna buy another set as backups in case I blow up one. But I don't think there is a tweeter out there at under $14 each that will touch these babies.:o

Which BA crossover and mids are you running them on? I am tempted to swap them in for my 6.4 Pro tweeters. Which mount did you mate them with and how's the fit?

The x-over from the basic s60 component set and the mounts from the same set for the tweets. Fit like a glove (little lose but they stay in place).

They don't seem to fit my Pro flush mounts. I found some tea light candles in my house that have a clear plastic base. Same diameter as my current Boston mounts - so I will probably just modify these to fit the Alpines. DIY baby!

I put the Alpine SPX-177R Component set in my car this weekend to check them out against my Diamond Audio D661s Component Set. The tweeter is really good. It images really well and has a very open and airy sound.
I think that I am going to try to pair them up with the D661 woofer to see how they work together. My wife thinks that I am crazy because my brand new car never seems to be totally put back together. She does not understand how obsessed I am with getting the sound just right. I am determined to get this car right because I could never get any of them to sound the way that I wanted them to.
I spent a couple of hours last night tuning the passive crossovers, amp crossovers and gains to get it to sound right. It usually takes me about two to three weeks to tune a change in to my system because I have a certain sound that I look for.
For the money this is a great tweeter that I think a lot of people would be very happy with. I think that it sounds a lot like the old Boston Acoustics Neo3r. I still have a set of them in my archives.
