Default FJ Install - first install in years

Sort of like a radio show caller, long time lurker, pretty much first time poster. Can't say enough about how much this forum is fresh air to me after being a competitor and judge some years back and honestly just walked away from anything car audio. I've been around the block but just discovering this forum reading post after post over the last year and looking at DIY systems with Partsexpress/Madisound products...it just looked like a lot of fun.

I just finished up a very quick and budgeted install, and no I'm not saying the dynamat and build process pics are not important, I'm just too lazy to download all the pics and reformat (b/c my dc sucks out loud).

The sub box and pillars were wrapped in Allante sport vinyl that looks almost perforated. I did this b/c it matches pretty darn well to the perforated/divet plastic theme that Toyota did on the dash and various other panels in the vehicle. (Probably can't tell from the pics and...again, I'll never buy another Fuji cam).

Those tweeter pods look great... especially what you say is quick work.

How does it sound? A dashmat might help, the FJs have been around long enough and they may make them.

I guess you didn't use the stock tweeter spots? They look like they might be good places to install domes, I'm waiting around to see if someone uses them for a pair of DLS or Dyns.

The subs mounted under one of the back corner windows is nice too. Where's the amp rack?

Anyway, great install, looking forward to seeing the rest

It sounds great, a dashmat will help but I'm in no dire rush. Once you've seen an amp-under-seat install and a HU w/ a cheapo dash kit, haven't you seen them all?

I'll still post pics, though, just in case another FJ'er inquires on the the install. Just need to borrow a better cam.

Sorry I didn't post more detail of the product:

HU: Alpine CDA9887 (running active)
Twt: Dayton RS28A (custom A-pillars)
Mid: Dayton RS180 (stock door location)
Sub: Sundown Audio SD-1 (custom sub box)
Amp: Protos VR5.500 aka NEXT (under driver's seat)

I actually traded for the Protos amp about a couple of years back for an old Autotek (Zed made) amp. He had a bunch of 'em but honestly the only place I'd think of in regards to getting them in the US is via forums like these or eBay. I know they still sell the Protos overseas.

Blue, I've seen your install as well in the FJCruiserforums.com, looks great. The box I had built with a local installer, front fascia is all wood with fiberglass backing. For no other reason than laziness I haven't downloaded all the pics. The pillars were built for me by another local installer (from Custom Sounds) and they are absolutely awesome, from the look to the overall design.

I really like that the CDA9887 gives me the flexibility to actually do a three way set up front + sub. So in a later date I may use the factory location for the midrange but for right now I'm liking the set up.

Is the top of the box wood as well as the baffle? If you have in progress pics please please post them. Did you use the little storage space behind the box to get more air space? Do you know what your max mounting depth was with the current box and how much air space you got out of it?

BTW, that vinyl is awesome. Where did you get it? It's a great match.

The top, left side, and front of the box is wood. Looking at the pics on my camera, the only pics I have are of the fiberglass prep, guess I slacked a little there. Max mounting depth is about 5.75 inches and I did not use the storage space. Cu. air space was a little less than .8, again a rough estimate (didn't do a popcorn measurement).

In regards to the vinyl it's called Allante and you should be able to get it at most automotive upholestery shops. It's absolutely great and very pliable, just don't overstretch it cause you will notice lines very easily. It's a little pricey but it's worth it.

I already miss the games. being married to an ASU family allowed me to go to three games this year. Hopefully more next year when I am a student (crosses fingers!!!)

so you have less than .4 cu ft. per sub? Are those 10s or 12s? Are the subs designed for that kind of airspace? I might have to stick to the conventional box if I can't get 1 cu. ft. for my Mag.

The subs (in the same chamber) can handle it and I have quite a bit of poly fill. I honestly think you can get a cube if you use the rear storage space and get the enclosure a little bit above the window line. You may not be able to tell from the pics but the enclosure does stick out over the ledge a bit.

Mine would have to hang over even more because I have a 6.75" mounting depth. I would be able to get a little bit more from using the rear storage pocket though. The magnet won't fit in it but it will fit part way in and it will also allow the motor to vent.

I'm starting to question the feasibility of doing an unobtrusive FG box for the Mag. One thing's for sure, the mag is not going ANYWHERE.

For what it's worth here's the headunit in the AI dash kit which I liked better than the Metra and Scosche but honestly...not any of them are great so that's going to be one of the first upgrades as I start to get bored. I have a few ideas and it'll be fun.

I also included a pic of the test fit of the RS180 is the door slot. Still have one more layer of dynamat and volara foam to put in but I'm still waiting b/c I'not completely sold on the Dayton driver. I've still got a lot of tuning to do but I'm also underbudget of what I was intending for the system so I'm looking at other midbass driver options.

The amp install would be another upgrade for the future but I'm absolutely content with it being hidden and tucked away. There is a ton of room underneath the FJ seats (seen stacked PDX's underneath already) so I don't worry about the heat and the back end of the amp is not as exposed as it looks when I push the seat back into driving position. There was a duct underneatht he seat as well but I closed that off prior to the install of the amp.

TX Flip, I have 2 questions for you:

1. Are those tweets firing directly at each other across the dash?

2. You mentioned that the 9887 has the capability of running 3 way active + sub. I was under the impression that it could only do a 2 way active + sub. Am I wrong or did you make a typo on that?

Questions aside, very nice install. I was looking at those very subs for my wife's DD. And that Allante looks great!
