Out of all the people...Dat you would be in the back of the list to use such product. Why pay 150 or more for a product? When you can add another 50 or 100 bucks and get a solid, well built o-scope. Not only will you get better/accurate readings you can use it for other purposes.
Dont get me wrong the DD1 is much quicker since its portable and easy to read (idiot/stupid proof- since it uses LED's to let you know once it clips) but an o-scope is much more accurate and dependable since you can SEE the wave form instead of an LED lighting up.
LOL= I know this is for a friend but please let him know he can buy an o-scope and get more accurate better results.
PS: I got my Tek 465 (yeah yeah... its over 30 years old... but its more realiable and depandable than Steve Meade's product). My scope not only was used for over 30 years but its still reliable and more accurate and will probably go on for another 10-20 years before serious maintance is needed. Plus it has better resolution on its CRT screen than more digital hand-held scopes (if not all hand held scopes). I keep saying this about hand-held scopes, they have squiggly scratchy lines on their waves (sorta like trying to draw curvy lines on a 95 windows paint software...good luck).

Yeah I have a nice scope. Trying to get him to forget about it and buy another scope
Yeah, a lot of people this days want hand-held digital scopes simple because of their size and weight (cannot be compared to the Ole' Tek scopes thats for sure, lol). The only problem is that their limited to 1mhz (which is more than enough for amplifiers signal since it only goes around 20khz) but also their display....to me it seems like its been run by Windows 90 paint program, lol.
Hopefully you convience your friend, I've seen reputable hand-held scopes go for 100 bucks and they do a good job with audio singal. I know the DD1 is around 150.00 and its pretty much a "DUMMY's" scope or for those that aren't capable of actually using a o-scope.
You can do the same thing the DD-1 does with an old Radio Shack mini-amp and voltage divider. Only difference is that you use your ear to hear when clipping occurs rather than seeing the LED blink. Oh, and you'll also need the appropriate test tones.
^ This. I have used this tactic for many years before I went to drop $ on a solid O-Scope. This is also been taught in the industry by many MECP Masters and SME's.

I love how everyone hates on the DD1 just because its NOT an O-scope when people with o-scopes only use them to set gains 99.999% of the time.
I dont hate it, I just see that you can spend the same amount of money on a scope (hand held or big ole' Tektronix) and do more than just check for clipping. But I guess your pretty much saying that your willing to pay 150.00 for something you'll probably only use a couple of times, but with a scope you can use it for countless of applications.
but with a scope you can use it for countless of applications.
I can count the number of "countless" times I used my scope for other purposes on one finger. Maybe that's just me? But a scope does look cool on your work bench next to a couple of Tesla coils. I wonder where I put my lab coat?
Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Hate all you want on those with a O-scope. But I use mine all the time for things like probing CAN wires, RGB inputs and outputs, whether I am getting a true sine-like waveform or am getting more of a triangle or square wave, PWM signals to find out why HIDs are having issues, VSS signals, and as my daily DMM.
I thought you were making a similar device for less, My guy would rather wait for you then give Meade his money.
Yes, but we have other stuff to build first. The chances of it coming out this year are low.
I'd rather the guy use a scope. Then you can see exactly what the amp is doing rather than being told. 1% THD is nothing in terms of damaging levels of distortion. But it sells amps and woofers.
The reason I don't use a scope to set gain is because I just turn the gain on amps all the way down then adjust the signal from an upstream processor. I don't use amps that cut the signal 100% at full CCW because those aren't really gain controls but input attenuators.
