Default Dash and pillar mounted mids

I am thinking about mounting mids on my dash or pillars. I have seen pics of mids on the dash aimed parallel with the windsheild and sometimes on axis.

In the on axis mounting locations it seems like there would be reflections from the gauge pods (speedo etc). Is this typically an issue? I t would be great if people would discuss their tuning expereinces with dash and pillar mounted mids and post pics.

I just went from mid's in the kicks facing each other and tweeters in the a pillar facing each other to mid and tweeter in the pillars a lot more on axis.
Got mayor improvement in tonality, imaging, staging and detal with very little T/A and eq work.
The drawback is that now it's not as solid two seat car as it was before.
The insturment cluster is a little in the way, but I cant notice any negative effects.
Pics of the pillars.

Thanks Doitor. It looks like the passenger side is on axis with the driver and the driver side is on axis with the passenger. Is that correct? Also, you mounted the mids very close to the sails, did you experiment with them closer to the windshield?

I'm in the process of figuring out how to put my mids on the dash as well. I just put 1.25 inch tweets crossed at 2kHz compared to my old tweets crossed at 5kHz and it makes a huge difference.

I think having them in the pillars as wide as possible on the drivers side really makes a diffrence as well.

That is awesome work. What kind of midbasses are you using? In the doors or kicks? Subs? Post the rest of your system to the onlookers.

The pods are aimed to the upper front corner of the rear side windows.
Experimented a lot and this gave the best results in my car.

Full HAT Legatia front stage. L831-3 with the L8's on the doors. Subs are two jl Audio 12w6v2's. All powered by 5 JL Slash amps and with an alpine PXA-H900 for processing.
Take a look at the install section on the forum for a full 30 something pages of build log.

I did these for a friend. No competition just personal use. Aimed toward center of front seats.

I suck at photography, sorry.

But you are obviously awesome at fabrication. Of the excellent pillar installs shown here this one blends so well it looks like stock and seems to impair driving view maybe just a smidge if at all.

Midranges are aimed the opposite windows top frame.

Tweeter is adjustable but aimed more or less up towards the dome light in the car.

Works really well.

Maxxis-Very cool looking setup. What is the car or truck?
Where is your dome light? Near the window or just behind the seats?

Looks like you have the mids mounted on the sail panels. When I tried that the sail panels started bending under the weight of the speaker. Did you have any problems with that?

It's called flock.
It's great for complex shapes like this one.
Final look/texture is close to microsuede (matches the dashmat premium really well) and you can also spray paint it to color match.
It comes in a powder like form. To use it you apply glue to the piece and use a shaker to pour the flock into the piece.

Both sides were fabbed from stock non-tweeter pillars. The grille on the dash is hiding the hole where the mids used to be. We ran out of time to get a new panel so I made those blanks to cover the holes.

Maxxis - I just read your build log.

The mids are supported by the door panel.

My wife has a 96 civic and the dome light is directly behind the front seats.

I just read Doitors and Big Reds build log also. That's a lot of reading.

Thanks for reading

The dome light is right above the front seats if they are moved all the way back. Same place as your wife's car would have it.

The midrange pods is indeed supported by the door so no problems with the weight of the speaker. The DLS 3" is quite heavy with the 3" VC and huge magnet but its well supported. I was going to go with apillar for both but the side of the midrange held me back. The covering would have been a nightmare.
