Default Getting loud with 12" type R

I have a pair of Type R 12's, and i have them hooked up at 4 ohms bridged to a precision power pc2350 (1400 watts). They get loud but not as loud as you would expect them to be. I am figuring it is because of the box they are in. It is a generic bassworks box from best buy. I am figuring that building a box more to specs would greatly benefit the subs.

Anyone have some good ideas for a box for these two subs? Would it really make a bigger difference in getting low and louder? 1400 watts should be more than enough for these!

download the spec sheet from alpine and build your box to the listed specs...they have vented and sealed suggestions
and from experience...dont expect too much out of that sub. it sounded muddy to me.

I have been looking into the IDmax 12 as a replacement. Would that sub be any better?

I would definitely try a different box for them. Most of the boxes you get from stores aren't that great.

Are you using a sealed or vented box right now? Power?

What kind of dimensions do you have available for the box?

I have used a 1.75 cubic foot (net) ported box tuned around 35Hz for each of those drivers which I felt was a good end result. But not my favorite subs, which is why I am using a pair of 10" Image Dynamics ID10v.3 (not the IDMax due to budget).

Is it your favorite because it is louder and gets deeper or because it is more accurate? Or Both? I can get a hold of two IDmax 12's but am wondering if it is worth the difference from the type r's.....

I got a great deal on the ID10's due to a mis-print on a retailer website.
I like them because I can use a smaller box than I would need for 12's since I am trying to preserve luggage space in my trunk.
Still, the box is 3 cubes net for two 10's, ported to 35Hz. The ID's can play up into the midbass range without a fuss and it helps in my case since I have a big dip in the car's transfer function between 65-70Hz.
I actually think the ID10's get louder than the alpine Type R 12's in my setup. I am hitting 142+dB at competition with the ID10's (I entered in SPL just for fun). Honestly I don't need anything louder than that else I'd have more hearing damage than I'd like

I don't have any experience with the IDMAX, so I can't comment on them, but I am sure they are much better than the ID in terms of power handling.

i heard id maxes in an ib set up and they made me want to hook-up my type-r to a wall socket,afterwards...
but thats my personal taste.

you already have em.....try building a box to alpine's spec. you may end up satisfied after all.

Yea, i guess before i go and spend hundreds on two IDmax's i might as well give the type r's a shot. I will build a box and see if i like first...Even though i know that the IDmax 12's will get lower. Manufacturer specs say to build a box tuned to 28 hertz, thats better than 33 hertz as recommended by alpine.

The type R is a well built sub for the money. That being said I dont consider them to be a SQ sub at all. In the right box though they can get VERY LLLOOOUUUUDDDD. A guy on another forum summed it up well when he described them as sounding like a wet fart. Of course it was a wet fart that would flex your roof lol.

The ID's IMHO get loud and do so with a fair amount of SQ mixed in. That's just personal experience though. Your results may differ. Keep us updated!
