I don't know if this has come up before or not, so I'm just going to shoot...
Carpet padding(jute) can be a great alternative to fiberglass "mat" in certain situations...
2 MAJOR situations that I've used it with PERFECT results was
A. Spare tire well enclosure, housed 3-10's.. Spare tire well was lined with 1/2" CP and slathered with resin...
In the end, you could stand on the tub (sans top) with NO flex...
B. Built some speaker pods, used CP as a "shell" for the back side of the pods... applied resin to the OUTSIDE only of the "shell" creating just that, a SHELL... with a soft, dead interior...
They hung on the inside of a Ford ranger door, and we installed an 8" sub in the door as well, this effectively isolated the components from the sub and gave the components something SOLID to work against..
Again, this isn't a replacement FOR, but and alternative TO, layer after layer after layer of glass..
It builds strength fast...
Possibilities...
Hope this gives some, some ideas...

Now you have me curious. In the spare tire well application, all you used for the bottom was the padding and resin? Did you apply all the resin at once? How fast did the resin soak through the carpet padding or does it absorb a significant amount of resin? This seems like it could be a ridiculously fast way to get a spare tire well project done.
If you look on some home audio sites they discuss and use carpet padding with success, but it has got to be Jute not the stuff made of foam. 1/2" minimum.
You can also use the carpet pieces in a trunk for the base just by adding resin too... Just get a spare from the junkyard and you are good to go :-)
Yep, like I said, not a replacement, but it's still a "matrix" for the resin to hold together (with a lot of strenth I might add)

Indeed, but again, it's not a replacement FOR glass in verious apps... but it does a hell of a job...
It'll soak up a LOT of resin pretty quick... we mixed 1/2gal at a shot and dumped and sperad it with a wide brush rather fast... It only soaks about 1/2 way through in most places, leaving a "soft" outter surface, that you can add resin to and finish, or not...

Could you post some pics of what you did and what it looks like?
Was a long time ago Sir.. So I do not have pics, sorry...
This is conceptual, you have to picture it, because every situation is different... Bring out the fabricator in you..
It looks like carpet padding... seriously, even after the resin...
One thing that I might mention is that say in a spare tire well, you are going to need to "pie cut" the padding to take out large portions of fabric to make it lay FLAT against the well, without a bunch of wrinckles...
You spend a lot of time cutting with razors prior to ANYTHING...
Once you can make a "soft tub", you can apply resin.. gaps have to be glassed over... less/no gaps less/no glass...
