Default Fans, how to?

i have three amps in my set up. i am admittedly very new to all this. the wiring for the amps is pretty straight forward.

though my remote leads may need work. i currently have them daisy chained (i think thats what its called) first to AC Matrix, the to each amp in a series. They turn on fine, but i feel that there is a better way of send a turn-on signal to the amps. inout would be greatly appreciated

Back to the fans. becasue i am going for a mostly stealth look in the trunk, there is little to no airflow and the amps get warm, one gets downright HOT, i want to prevent damage so i want to add a fan, maybe 2, most likely two, an intake fan and a exhaust(?) fan. my problem is that i dont know how to wire the fans to the system ihave so that they only turn on when the stereo is on.

ideas? examples? suggestions? PLEASE thank you so much!

CC

You should use a relay on your remote turn on leads. you can also use the same relay to run the fans. Check out Basic Car Audio Electronics. on the right side scroll down to no. 36 it explains relays for you and no.65 is all about fans. i would start there

Wire the relay like this, they have numbers on the bottom next to the pins/terminals:

30 - power in ( connect to your distribution block if you are using one), use a fuse
87 - power out (to fan positive)
86 - control current in ( wire to remote turn on wire)
85 - to ground

some relays have 5 terminals, the extra one will be labeled 87A, these are normally referred to as a "change over" relay), you can still use it like a 4 terminal relay just don't use the 87A.

How the "change over" relay works is, when the relay is off, terminal 87A has power when the relay is turned on (triggered) 87 has power and 87A is off.

^That's the popular Bosch SPDT relay.... And quite cheap also, I'll use a 10A fuse(sorry, should be all the fan's rated current)
Just some precaution on this, make sure the 87A are properly terminated...

Or you can go one more and get a 10A relay that is smaller. They only seem to make them board mount so you have to solder wires onto them, but they take a smaller current from your HU to power the coil. I have one with a 3A fuse powering two amp remotes and two PC case fans, it works fine. The HU only runs the relay. They talk about this relay on bcae1.com someplace, but many do use the larger 30A bosch relay they are very common and a few bucks on amazon or PE, etc., and the plug with leads is about that much more. Try to get one with the diode in it if you can that controls back RF though typically not an issue. You can hock the relay out of a lot of older GM cars they have a bank of them under the hood.

so i get things right the first time. please bear with me.

i have 3 amps, a line driver, and will be adding 2 fans.

i will get a 4 pin relay.

remote lead from HU will go to Pin 86

Pin 87 will go to rem in on each amp and linedriver, and to each fan positive?

12v+ will go into Pin 30

i believe I'm biting off more than i can chew at this point. please help.

I think I posted this in a similar thread. here is how you do it. the HU RTO goes to the relay ONLY. the output from the relay turns on EVERYTHING else.

minibar, you did post this elsewhere, i saw it and got me thinking what i just posted. i want to make sure i am using the remaining pins correctly. by grounding relay to same ground as AMPs and Line Drivers, and fans, will that cause a ground loop?

am i confusing a grd loop with something else?

no wont cause a ground loop. the ground for the relay is just for the energizer coil that turns the relay on. you can ground it to the same location as the amplifier ground.

a ground loop, for car audio purposes has more to do with RCAs and amplifier grounds.

I usually just loop a short piece of wire from the ground terminal up to the mounting screw, but you can do it the way you said also
