crossover settings on Clarion cz309?

they all sound the same, settings are 50hz, 80, 120 and passthrough

is this normal? am I doing/hearing something incorrectly?

If you listen to a pink noise track, listening to the subwoofer, you should notice marked differences between those settings.

You are using the sub preout, right?

Then you should notice a difference on a pink noise track (music my be a little harder to tell, depending on the music). Also, you could use a sweep tone, from say 30Hz to 150Hz, play it using the different crossover points and it should very obviously show a difference.

My CZ500 only does 80Hz, 100Hz, and 120Hz... Wish it was more flexible, I use the crossovers in my amps because they're infinitely variable.
