Generally with a perfect install, there will be zero noise. I believe that its safe to say that everyone here has battled long and hard with noise, and in some cases, theres not much there to do. Has anyone tried using those ferrite cores or decoupling capacitors to minimize noise on power cables?

With an adequate install there should be no noise. Not everyone here has a problem with noise, like I said, the only time I've encountered noise was when I either A: did something wrong or B: was working with faulty equipment. With the possibility of C: my doing something wrong causing equipment to fail.
I'm not sure which cases you're talking about that nothing could be done about, but I know that ferrite cores and caps have never been necessary for me.
I typically use a 1F cap Between the Alt/Battery/power wire run to help filter AC ripple

I've got the same right now... Battery is relocated to the rear, so no pre-filtering from the battery for car systems...
Have I determined yet it's value, no... The problem I have/had may be elsewhere... (I don't daily drive the car, just getting it back together for summer)
Ferrite beads are used EVERYWHERE... but not so much in cars... Not a lot of stray high frequency going on... not saying there isn't SOME... but not like in the "home" enviroment...
Practically every home electronic item has a ferrite bead either external or intermal to it... and the powerwire loops though it... (any that could suffer from stray signals, that is)
It's the first line of defence against RF leaking in... it creates a "low pass" filter allowing 120v 60hz to pass with easy... yet blocking higher frequencies..

I've never had noise issues unless I did something wrong or equipment failed. Or I did something wrong causing equipment to fail

I think it's a very worthwile statement. 9 times out of ten, someone who finds they are experiencing some sort of noise is doing so because of one of the things Benny said above- Not grounding properly being the main cause.
I mean, how much filtering do you really need on a cars DC supply?
Battery in the back, nothing between the alt and the car.. so yeah..
