Default Living in a land of wiring confusion.

Hello folks and good day.

I'll try to give as much info as possible and maybe that will help.

Vehicle - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ
Speakers - MB Quart PVI-216 components
Amp - MB Quart Discus DSC-450 (50W x 4 @4 ohms)
HU - Kenwood KDC-248U
Sub - To be purchased at a later date.

The Kenwood HU has only 1 pair of rca outputs (rear/sub). I'd like to run the components up front with the DSC-450 amp and bridge channels 3/4 when I add the sub. I intend to use the passive xovers supplied with the speakers and this is causing part of my confusion.

The xover wiring diagram shows both the tweeters and woofers going into the xover, but only the woofer connection going to the amp. Is this the correct way to do it? I'm assuming then that the left side goes to channel 1 on the amp and the right to channel 2, or vice versa? The amp can be ran in either 2 channel or 4 channel mode, so logically I should use 2 channel? Since I have only 1 pair of rca outs, will it be possible for me to then bridge channels 3/4 when I'm ready to add the sub?

I've considered replacing the Kenwood HU or perhaps using an eq to get a sub out? I'm sure I'm making this harder than I need to, but better to ask a question than to screw up the install.

If the crossovers have only one set of inputs labeled "amp" then yes.
I'm assuming your amp has speaker level inputs?
And you should be able to bridge 3/4 together for your sub.
If you look at the printing on the amp by the channels it will tell you which ones to use.
Unless of course if that amp is not bridge-able, look in the book for that.

You would FAR further ahead buying a HU with proper outputs...

You would also most likely get a bunch of cool new features too...

That's my recc, the rest will come to you, it's pretty straight forward, you'll see..

I agree with Aaron, it would be better to get a HU with at least two outputs, if you plan on going active or adding rear amplification go for one with 3 pairs.

yes *if* the crossovers on your amp can be set independently. set your headunit to full pass and split it with a pair of Y cables at the amp. 1/2 channel set to full pass on your amp feeding the passive crossovers, and 3/4 set to low pass bridged for your sub. but as the others said if you want to do more, that kenwood should be upgraded

i cant find the manual in english but i see your confusion from the diagrams. this is what i found, if thats not the diagrams you have please post back http://www.maxxsonics.net/manuals/mb...akerManual.pdf

it looks like it is set up for 1 amp for the tweeters, and one for the mids. to use 1 amp to run the tweeters and mids with that crossover, you need to hook tw- to wf- to amp- and tw+ to wf+ to amp+.

Slight correction, high pass should be used for components, not so much full pass, removing the low info they can not reproduce anyway..

Same reason you low pass the sub..

inuyasha.rules - the link to the speaker manual is different than the one I have here. I swear, it's a pain trying trying to find the english in the manual and even then they don't provide much guidance.

I think I'll yank the Kenwood out of my Jeep and see about buying something with either 2 or 3 pairs of RCA's. I can sell the old HU on craigslist or something.

Thanks guys for the assistance.

yes but he has passive crossovers downstream from the amp. wouldnt adding more signal processing induce losses that negate the point of adding high end speakers?

greyhnd - the wiring for the crossovers is the same no matter what headunit you are using. do you have a link for the install manual? even if its not English the wiring diagrams would be helpful.

inuyasha.rules - Yes, I found the install manual online and saved it. I think once I get a HU with sufficient number of rca outs I'll be in good shape.

Maybe I'm mistaken or just don't understand, but wouldn't I want my amp xovers set to "full" and let the passive xovers do their job? I think I'm thinking along the same lines as you are.
