Hey guys im building a sub box and amp rack all in one in i guess they call a triangle the box. My question is that ive built a few boxes before but im use to doing simple boxes that are never really seen. My question is ive seen in most builds they use two tops if you will. One for the sub the second a decretive top? I got some pics to share but im not sure how to do the two top design to make it look decent
Also I had messed up and drilled some holes through the box small 1/8 holes to mount the divider between sub and amp so know i have the little holes and I was wondering do I need to fill them in with wood putty or bondo or just leave them?
usually if there are two tops, one is to make it look cleaner/ add a tad bit of strength. It will usually also add some protection to your subs. All you need to do in this instance, if thats what your refering to, is to cut a replica top peice and measure the exterior of your subs. You can also place them down and trace, then cut. You actually want to cut a tad bit out from that trace because it will be harder to fit down your sub if it has a rubber ring up top.
Make sure you seal in the holes, and also use wood glue and screws and also some sort of sealant like silicone to put around the seams of your wood.
I always try to seal my box. The holes are on the amp side but I wasnt sure if it had any issue when covering the box and to be honest im not sure if im going to be using carpet or do something diffrent. Can I use an everyday house hold chaulk like window sealant? I dont have a rubber ring with my sub it lays flat and has a beuty ring that screws to it. My thought was to build a small board that will fit inside the sub area which is the right side and brace it up so it sits just about flush Then build a second top but I think it would look to far sunken in if that makes any sense?
The box is 3/4 board not plywood. I cant recall what you would call it maybe press board? Its durable and the sub isnt going to be set up to be powerful. I normally use mfd board but im on a budget and found these peices lying around my garage so I figured i have enough to build it.
Most of the spl guys like to do a double baffle for strength, because they all think their systems are so powerful it will splinter the box into a million pieces if they dont. Single baffle should be fine. Although with a double baffle you can inset the subwoofers so they sit flush with the top.
Could i make a top out of a thinner wood like 1/4 or 1/2? Also reqemendations on a way to seal the box? I had some liquid nails but ran out so im wondering if a clear window or home house caulk be good enough?

You could use something thinner if all you're doing is for beauty... it would all depend on how "flush" you want the sub.
You could use the house caulk without much problem... done it plenty of times before.
You need to fill every hole or air leak for it to even be called a sealed enclosure :-) grab another tube of liquid nails man.
Simply cut out another sheet of timber the length and width of the show panel and route/jigsaw out the outer ring of the sub woofer to make it all flush. Then just sand everything level or ad another piece to the top and bottom to flush it all off.
what bit do you guys recomend to use on a router to cut the hole? I have a rotozip but it dosnt so a great job and im a bit better with a jigsaw but not the best
