Every major car audio company out there seems to release two seemingly identical nav units - one unit with physical knobs and one without (and therefore a slightly larger screen) - but with significantly different prices.
For instance: What's the difference between the Kenwood DNX6990HD and the DNX9990HD other than having knobs vs not having knobs? Or how about the Clarion NX602 and the the NX702?
Both units seem EXACTLY the same, and even the respective company's web pages don't show a single difference listed other than the knobs.
So, why would you pay hundreds more, potentially, to have no knobs and half an inch more screen space?
In the case of the Clarion NX702 versus the 602, the 702 alleges to have 3 way active (i.e. mid, tweet, sub) with time alignment. IIRC, the 602 DOES NOT have full active. Granted, Crutchfield is the only place I have seen the NX702 advertised as a full active double din, so it could be a misprint on their part.
The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie -- deliberate, contrived and dishonest, but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. Belief in myths allows the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.
The DNX9990HD has 2 USB ports vs 1. It has more Bands for the EQ, AHA Radio (6990 doesn't) and plays DIVX (I think the 6990 can too but not sure since there's no info on the spec sheet I have). Bigger screen with the ability to tilt the screen when needed.

I'll repeat it for the miliionth time : All amps do NOT sound the same ... It's astonishing to me that nobody understands this
Why? Because they can. The rotary volume know appeals to some people, and the motorized screen w/ buttons appeals to others.
I don't know about Calrion, but as far as Kenwood goes, I can tell you from firsthand experience that the 9990 responds to commands a little faster than the 6990 and if you look at the back of them you can see that just from the layout of the connections alone that they obviously do not share internals.

Well, that's good to know. I need 3-way active no matter what unit I purchase, but I really like knobs.
I would just get the Alpine INE-S920HD, which I really like the aesthetics of, but I hear that Alpine's choice in navigation sucks, and that Alpine decks tend to be on the warmth-lacking side (I like warm rather than defined).
If there were more proper reviews of these units all of this wouldn't be such a guessing game.
Thus far, there isn't much in the way of DD size head units purpose built for SQ. Kind of a shame really, when you consider that the larger display and processing power of a DD chassis could offer a much better interface if any manufacturer decides to build it.
That's why the market for outboard processors is growing, but the folks who want to upgrade to a full featured DD and also want high fidelity audio are basically stuck buying two pieces of equipment for the time being.

I have been very satisfied with my Alpine navigation (NVE-N872A add on unit), I have it running in both of my cars and have not had any issues with it...the Blackbird that one of them replaced on the other hand completely sucked.
The CX702 adds a bigger screen, Real Time Traffic data, the 3-way active crossover with time alignment, HD Radio is built in instead of HD Ready, and I thought there was something about the dual zone abilities but I can't see any differences on the web site.
