I went through this with a pair of LCY Ribbons. The neo magnets often have coatings to ensure longevity, more specifically it can rust or corrode (contains iron). Neo mags can also chip really easily. The sucky part is their coatings often brake down faster than the magnet itself. What's supposed to be a safety net ends up wearing down faster.
What you really want is a good quality coating. You can half ass it and tediously remove the plating on neo motors but then they remain exposed. That's why I'm assuming that technically these can't be fixed. It would require demagnetization, removal, and recoating (might not be possible). There is an order to these things.
Those of you that have operational units should really check the status of the plating. It may be bubbling and flaking off as soon as it hits a harsh climate like a car. Tic tac tic tac
They told me the coil itself is damaged (on both pairs) and has nothing to do with the motor. Obviously it can be re-coned, but I dont think parts express will be doing that. I would expect that AURA is going to get a HUGE return shipment from PE.
Oh God, I dont have time right to tinker with these damn subs.....I hope PE will return even after the return period. What a freakin nightmare for them and the customers.
The flaking on one of mine I messed with wasnt too bad, but I decided to chip it away anyway. The stupid coating doesn't even look like plating, it looks like paint!
When you take the magnet off, you have about a 3/8" gap or so between the magnets and the center pole piece that contains the copper rings. Look at the image that NPDang posted of the disassembled motor (I think the link is on the first page of this thread).
The coil, on the bottom end, or the part that extends furthest into the magnetic field, appeared fine, except for some black glue that was not flush with the coil. Hard to explain.
The coil is wound, and glued at the top and bottom. At the bottom, there were parts kinda poorly glued and they protruded out a bit.
In that motor, there were fragments of magnet plating that were "delaminating" but only a bubble that was about to come off, so I scraped it off. I have not re-powered the speaker yet to find out if I "fixed it".
I cant see the delaminating piece on that particular sub causing that noise in the video, there must be something else causing it, I just dont have the time right now to dick around with it, hell I still have to finish my current install!
can't y'all just EQ that kind of thing out? a little boost here, a little cut there.
Unfortunately no, the sound is coming from the driver itself. When the driver moves, it is creating these undesired noises. The undesired noise is not coming from the input of the sound source, but by a fault in the driver itself. Therefore it cannot be EQ'ed out.
I love mine. One of the best sounding subs I've used. Not used it sealed but good low end with a ported alignment. Gonna be in my ride for some time to come.
So to those that have returned the subs, did you return them without even trying to clear the gap of the debris? Or you just didnt want to deal with it?
Seems to me that the subs arent actually "ruined" just, need a quick inspection/cleaning before first use. I understand they didnt tell you this on pe.com, but to me, its still a good deal on a great/unique sub.
You say at 70mph you cant hear a difference? Does this mean at 35 you can?

I think it really depends on the driver.. My pair had straight up bad coils.. I pulled mine apart and there was no debris sitting in the motor..

There was no debris in any of mine, just delamination and a slapping sound (listen to audio on video link).
I scraped most of it away with one sub, only to have a nice fireworks show after running a sub with 100-200watts off a 30hz tone. The noise lessened, but was still there. I am convinced this is as much a voice coil problem (fitment wise) as it is a magnet issue. Im not going to deal with it, too many nice drivers out there to try and mickey mouse this sub. $600 dollars I can use to pay property taxes I guess Thank you county for re-assessing me.
Well, this sucks. I bought mine right when the sale started. Still have 2 weeks left of deployment until I even get to mess with them. Hopefully they're both good.

Any update on this situation? Just had my two put in and the installer said I was experiencing these issues. Is Aura willing to replace now that they are supposedly back in business?
I don't think aura had anything to do with replacing them. Im pretty sure partsexpress was exchanging them. And they've been sold out for a long time. Your only recourse is to probably get a refund
Iirc, they never went out of business completely. Just were bought out and restructured again. Now they do ht and pro audio exclusively. Even making the ns subs again
