Not to mention all the priest/preachers that got caught molesting children (mostly boys). Yet people still have their backs and say that they would pray and yap yap yap. Creeps.
That's another one that hits close to home. I grew up in the area where Father Gilbert Gauthier was a priest. One of my friends confided in me saying what was being done to him by the priest, and I found it hard to believe. I asked both my mother and grandmother about it, and they responded by telling me that my friend was lying and that I couldn't play with him any longer. He had a mental breakdown when we were in the 6th grade and went from institution to institution until we were in high school.
I guess I'm lucky I was never forced to be an altar servant, but sadly, many of my friends who were are still screwed up till this very day.

Don't forget that lots of people do evil deeds under the cloak of christianity. They are not Christians though.
I completely agree. Politicians are the worst. You have liberal democrats like Kerry who push for abortion rights yet he claims he's Catholic. You are not a Catholic if you believe in abortion. It's not a grey area it's black and white. The Church has commented on this in the past. Nancy Pelosi, another great example. It's embarrassing for her to claim the Church. I wonder sometimes if they do it on purpose to try and weaken the Church or maybe it's for political gain since they see a way to try and pull some religious conservatives.
It obviously goes deeper than just politics and the Catholic faith. Christians as a whole are under attack today. I have a feeling we're going to see a lot more perverts and thieves and whatever popping up under the cloak of Christianity. It will be enough to send those that had little faith to begin with over the line to atheism and that's probably what they want. Now is the time we all have to stick together and have more faith than ever.

It's not just politicians... I can't tell you how many legitimate businesses as well as con men have no problems mentioning faith, religion, the church, etc. when trying to solicit business or beg for money.

That is terrible and I hope the Priest burns in hell and gets everything he did done back to him. I hate these guys as bad or worse than you guys do. Not only did he screw up the lives of many innocent boys and their families but it's an attack on the Church as well. I just read he's free now, he deserved to die in prison. I don't know what to say other than he will get his in the end.

I think some of the things that have happened are awful. I don't like how the Catholic Church handled some of it's problems and I'm Catholic. They acted slowly and did not get rid of the offenders when they should have. You will hear no excuses from me on that. The thing you have to remember is the Church is run by man and men make mistakes. It doesn't make the religion as a whole bad because a few individuals are sick in the head. They need to be removed and dealt with. I know you guys absolutely love these type of stories, in a Church with tens of thousands of Priests, .01% are sick in the head and you condemn the entire Church. We all know every child molester is religious of course.
The problem I see with this is that this small number of people are protected by the church. In turn each person they molest is affected. For example if one priest molests let's say 10 people-- this has much larger consequences. How many of those 10 will go on to repeat what was done to them? The number grows exponentially with time. I don't generally go out of my way to belittle any religious person, but when they do stupid shit that affects others then I have a problem with it.

C'mon GN... Politicians are absolutely some of the worst offenders, but I hope you are not implying that this is exclusive to one party or another. Have you done any reading up on THE FAMILY? Creepy shit.

THIS. It's amazing how through faith and believing that the offenders are protected.

As do I. Changes have been made internally to investigate and get rid of these people much, much quicker. You have to understand though that there are so many greedy people looking to make a quick buck that there are a ton of false claims made against the Church. This slows down the process and not only hurts the Church but it hurts the true victims even more.

It's not exclusive to one party but in general the conservatives' beliefs are much closer to the Church's beliefs so it's easier to find examples from the democrats. My example was abortion and you're not going to find a whole lot of republicans that believe in it plus claim to be Catholic so that's why I used the two examples I did. I'm sure both sides use religion to help out their political careers.

You really need to read up on THE FAMILY. Especially if you think it's dems that are most guilty. I judge a man by his actions before anything else. To me religion and politics have nothing to do with your character-- It's all about your actions. All too often in society you are prematurely judged as a person by your political and religious beliefs.

Not even the atheists in this thread have said anything like that. You might want to take a step back and reevaluate yourself. Maybe you don't belong here.

If it's factual based I will read it but I'm not reading some Micheal Moore fiction novel.

Thats the problem, there is no hell to burn and the priest probably already knows that. And knows that aslong as he is not caught in the act or prosecuted he is safe.
Am pretty sure their hoping and praying god would come down and tell "No dont do that, dont touch that boy" and when god fails to do so, they continue to do what they do and laugh at faith but keep using it as a cover-up and disguise.
My grandmothers were/are very religious, my mother was kinda religous but fail to go to church every sunday (I still thank her for that, otherwise I probably would be brain-washed). Now my father he was pretty smart and told me about this so call god. Then in high school a teacher would teach me and a few others about religion and how it got to what it is now. I did a lot of research and found out my ancestors where never catholic nor christians. But how they (europeans) brought religion to what is now Mexico, South & North America (so I wont have to name all the countries). All I can say it wasn't pretty.

Oh I belong...I certainly belong. This is a thread made to bait "atheists" right? Fact is you guys pretty much hate whatever isn't exactly like you in your beliefs. So I've been baited and here I am.

That there alone-- this is the problem. Are you afraid of peeling back some layers? You don't have to drink koolaid. I don't agree with everything that guy has ever said, but he makes some very valid points. It's the extreme right that has gone out of it's way to marginalize him, so their followers will not even entertain the idea of LISTENING. Which is the basis for any good debate. Not just the game play of thinking of what you are going to say while the other person is making their point. Why is it that people stopped LISTENING? I guess it comes part and parcel with divide and conquer. Just another reason to dislike politics and religion.

No...you're right. I'm sorry. I'm not going to do this at all.
It's ashame that the media sensationalizes all the wicked people do in the nameof God. I guarantee for every evil deed done by fake Christians there are 10 good deeds that go unnoticed. How many charity organizations can you name that aren't faith based?
