just need to replace my tv I watch football on. I barely use it but when I get time to relax its my spot.
I was going to pick up a cheap plasma but I am told not too for the usual burn in problems on screen
any good or bad experiences with any tv welcome.

Look in the paper and get the cheapest one you can find since you don't watch it much. Make sure it's a technology that's low maintenance. I actually like old tubes for the longevity they offer. We get 10-15 years out of our tube tv's on average.

Plasma burn in is hopelessly outdated information. My 50" Panasonic plasma gets used for video games and my wife and kid pause the DVR for hours at a time and leave the set on. Not an issue.

So yoursaying a new plasma will not have that issue ?
I need to research it some more

ok I have looked into it. unless its just a bottom of the barrel plasma then the burn in problem is a thing of the past ., they also have procedures your supposed to follow to break in the plasma
wonder how many never did

True. Image burn with plasmas have not been an issue for some time. The "glare" problem they used to have is mostly solved as well. Plasmas also have a better picture for the most part than LED or LCDs due to the higher refresh rate. My two Samsung plasmas have served me well for years. The 55" I got for $300 on craigslist but, that's probably just fantastic luck. Samsung plasma is my vote, for what it's worth.
I am going to get a plasma ..I have a lcd and LED is too much for the size I want.
thx

I've always like Panasonic's plsma displays, expecially at the lower end of the price spectrum. Just a really good quality picture and the anti glare filter works really well.
+1 on panasonic. I have a 42 inch panny and Samsung. The panny has the better picture and color IMO. The Samsung is good, but my Panasonic is three years old and is still the best picture I've seen. Rich, warm, detailed and blackest blacks. The LCD and LEDs are too bright for my tastes.

I've had a 42" Panasonic 720p plasma for 2 years now....I spent 6 months researching TVs (mostly on the hardcore and slightly fanatical lol AVS forum) and found that next to the discontinued Pioneer Kuro Elites (many thousands of $$$), the Panasonic Plasma had the best plasma in the business. Watching OTR tv, old SD DVDs, whatever, it looks amazing with no pixels and artifacts. Just a great experience overall.
Plasmas have produced for the most part, the closest CRT like pictures, including black levels and viewing angles. I have no regrets buying this unit aside from the fact that I couldn't fit a larger size in our giant entertainment center (so I put a pj in my office!).
I saw a Panny plasma 46" 1080p for about $500 at BB or HHGregg and 50" models for about another $100...
Anyway, it's your choice but for the money, you cannot beat the picture quality of the Panasonic plasma. I don't bother posting about too much here anymore but I've loved every minute of this TV...
I was going to buy a Panny they had but they were out . cant get it online or in stock. I am going to look for it somewhere else or order it off line somewhere if I find it.
was told that sony and panny used same screen . dont know if that is true or not.

Hey Jax.
I'm going to get a Panny 60" plasma to replace my old rear projection.
Was told many of the Pioneer engineers went to Panny when Pioneer stopped making big screens.
The burn in problem is no more. Only down side to plasma I can find is they do not do as well as LCD in a very bright room.
Vann's has a 42" at $630 FWIW.
I suspect prices will drop in January.
I found the panny I was going to buy at best buy at sears. I was about to get the 42 or 43 for $449. but I read some guy had a burn in issue. wonder if he adjusted the brightness to burn it in. I read you must turn in down for like first 200hrs to allow the phosphorus pixels or whatever to adjust . was told from factory they are all set to hot or brightest.
I guess I will go tomorrow to sears and check it out in person before I buy it.
heck I almost bought a samsung for $398 today at wally world but I know its the lowest line of the samsung and I really dont want to get the lowest model. I was unaware samsung has like 5 levels of their plasma tv.
I am leaning towards the panny just for the fact of the Pioneer part as I heard the Pioneer plasmas were the best when they were making them.
thing is now I dont know if I should gamble and wait to see if another larger panny goes on sale somewhere or what. plus I need about a week to have the play money in hand . lol...

now I cant decide if the 42 is big enough or its worth the extra $150 to get the 50 inch panny. need to sleep on it.

+2.....I have 3 Panasonic's(plasma) 42". 50" and just upgraded to a new 60" 1080p. The 42" is over 7 years old and has never given me any problems. If you watch a lot of sports with fast action than a plasma would be the only way to go...I have also heard a lot of good things about the Samsung plasma TVs also.
I could be wrong, but I think Panasonic has been selling plasma TVs longer than anyone out there
I'm also looking for a bigger tv for upstairs, currently I have a 32 visio that I got two years ago, I just need bigger because it's hard to see when far away not to mention I can't even hook up my ps3 because I cant see shyt. Im looking for at least a 46 or 47 inch and iv noticed plasmas in that area arnt that expensive, iv been ignoring plasmas because they are know for bein electric hogs.
Some of you mentioned the kinks have been worked out on the newer plasmas, it is a big difference between a plasma and an LCD, led, in electric use?
Plasma used to more energy than LCD or LED on similar class screen sizes, but the newest plasmas are far more efficient than even a couple years ago.
Panasonic 42" Viera 1080p plasma uses 99w.
Panasonic 42" Viera 1080p LCD uses 97w.

Tells me he's not very bright, the best Samsung will spank the best Panny, sorry, but true
Very possible, I haven't comparison shopped in awhile...for what its worth though, we're not talking "best" here, we're basic large format displays. When I was IT Manager at a nearby bank we put large format displays in our lobbies...which gave me an opportunity to compare many of the different vendors at the time. I was able to put the same source on a Samsung 50" 720p plasma right next to a Panansonic 50" 720p plasma, both cost around $1400 (this was about 5 years ago). It was no contest that the Panasonic had the nicest picture...but it was awhile ago.
I can get the 50 inch plasma panasonic for$599 at sears or best buy.
Now to wait and see if they drop.
Does anyone know whether they will give me discount if I put it on layaway and it drops while it's on layaway?
Just don't want to throw down entire amount today.
