Actually I believe it's 100 characters because I just tried making one the other day and it bitched because it was over 4 lines(6 but in the smallest print)and it was over 100 characters long which is nothing really.
Really pissed me off. Had to abreviate everything, totally lame. But I do agree there should be some sort of space limit because it really pisses me off to see a super long page with posts that are less than a sentence long and signatures that are way too big.
But the sig I made was just using up all the wasted space below the post anyways, it wasn't going to make my posts any bigger.

How about 200 with 6 lines but only allow size 1 font! lol. Probably not possible but oh well.

I think 100 chars and 4 lines should be plenty. I might increase it a bit, but it's definitely not going back to the old limits.
100 characters is going to be tough when some folks try to update their sigs, 200 would be nice. Was there a limit before now, it must have been well over 600 characters? Heck, my sig, though I rarely displayed it was 461 characters.
Here was my old sig...

My monitor has about 10 inches of forum-viewing space, assuming a non-maximized window. Four lines of sig take up about an inch. At ordinarily three posts per window, nearly 1/3 of the screen is taken up by endlessly redunant information. Do you say, "Hello, my name is J.R. 'Bob' Dobbs, I grew up in Dayton and spend a lot of money on green and gold argyle socks," _every_ time you speak up to someone else? Very little on the screen is actual content/conversation. God forbid those forums that allow a bunch of graphics in a sig!
