Default direct hit to the back...temporarly paralyzed

who's had this happen to them? last year i was helping my dad load up to go camping and fell backwards down the steps (4 long steps) with a 60lb ice chest. didn't feel a thing and realized i might be in trouble. got up, dusted myself off, and found I COULDN'T MOVE MY LEFT LEG! we finished loading and i took some ibuprofen. hobbled the next few days and SLOWLY getting movement back in it. freaky stuff.

Hasn't happened to me, thank god. But my friend broke his back snowboarding. We thought he was done walking but he recovered and still snowboards all winter long!

Probably slightly damaged a spinal nerve root or something? Dunno... you can get spinal 'contusions' which will cause full paralysis but can wear off in a few weeks. Doesn't sound quite like what happened to you, though.

TEAM, if it's gonna happen it'll happen to you

6 years ago my brother was playing with a 30 year old Wheel Horse lawn tractor. He was riding wheelies up a ditch bank and told me to try it. Well I popped the clutch a little too hard and the thing shot straight up the ditch, went airborn, and with me sitting properly in the seat, it came hood down on my head. As the tractor and me went backwards to the ground while upside down, I ended up flat on my back with my head turned to the side and a 350lb tractor falling hood first on the side of my face. He thought I was dead. My head swole and my ear grew three times its normal size. My earlobe was literally below my jaw. My mom always said as I was growing up, "Timmy, if you're gonna to git hurt, make sure it happens to your head cuz it's hard as hell". 13 years of moto-x and the worst crash I ever had was on a freakin lawn tractor

i have spent the last 5 years recovering from a back injury where i fell and landed on my lower back.chiropractor 2 times a week and im almost 100% now, worst thing ive ever had to do.5 years in constant pain all day every day.

i also became dependant on pain meds and quitting them was like every movie i have ever seen where a junkie has to withdraw from heroin, its taken over 4 months for my body and mind / mood to get back to anything like normal

its been a tough 5 years.

Lightbulb Re: direct hit to the back...temporarly paralyzed

When I was a young teenager, a kid threw a bottle at my face and it hit me between the eyes. I didn't get knocked out cold but my vision went completely black and all I could see was a skinny half-moon shaped light out of one eye for about 15 to 20 seconds until my vision slowly came back. So I guess I literally got my lights knocked out. There was a big gash between my eyes that took a few weeks to heal. Very scary experience.

I had a pinched nerve or something once that would make me lose motor control from the chest down on my left side at random, without pain. I'd be walking along and out of nowhere, slam! On the ground. Looking back it was kind of funny, like those pranks you see in internet vids, people really stared at me on that one!

I chalk it up to someone having a voodoo doll on my ass.......

I had that happen when I was bouncing at a bar. Dude smoked me in the back of the head with a bottle.
Lost all control of my right side and took nearly a week to get back up to speed.

Definitely not a fun experience, especially when you start holidays on the next day.

When I was about 10 my sister and I were taking turns running at the swingset and grabbing the monkey bar and swinging. I ran and my hands slipped on it and I went flying about 10 feet and my head landed smack against a big rock on the ground. My vision blocked out for maybe 10 seconds. I saw white stars for a few hours after that.

And a couple years ago I slipped on ice while playing ultimate frisbee, landed flat on my back and my head hit the frozen ground. Blacked out for a couple seconds couldn't stand up for a bit without falling over.

I have had a few major wipeouts on the ice that caused temporary numbness in extremities/ joints, but nothing that lingered more than a day or so.

It was probably some sort of minor nerve damage.
