Fidel Castro Steps down........what does this mean for us?
Is the cuban embargo ever going to end, i'd love to get my lips around a cuban cigar and puff that mofo.
Anyone this this is possible from the current or recent events with castro and his stepping down. Heard on the news that his younger brother is going to take over......what changes will happen in cuba that could affect us americans......
Re: Fidel Castro Steps down........what does this mean for us?
Raul Castro's de facto been in power for over a year now. He's also been their chief of army staff since at least the 1960s.
I hope that, regardless of the Cuban leadership situation, President Obama ends the embargo. It's just bad policy. Doesn't help us, and it hurts Cubans. And not just because I want a real Cuban cigar, either. Been there, done that, got that craving out of my system years ago. Not much of a cigar person.
Re: Fidel Castro Steps down........what does this mean for us?
Considering his brother has been his second-in-command for decades, and has been officially in charge for nearly a year and a half.... what's going to change?
Not a damn thing.
And as for Cuban cigars... well, they're nothing special. I've smoked tons of 'em, maybe more than anyone on this forum, I dunno, but they're really not that special just because they're Cuban. I've tried many others I like better.
I do hope the lot of the poor Cuban person gets better, but I don't think anything real is going to happen in Cuba until they decided they want it enough to rise up for it.
Just my $0.02.

Re: Fidel Castro Steps down........what does this mean for us?
As long as Fidel is alive there will be no change. Raul has been in power nearly as much as his brother and because of that I'm sure they think alike. Even if Raul has his own way of thinking, and it's less fucked up than Fidels, then I'm also sure he won't act on it. The Castro way is set in stone and for Raul to change anything he would disgrace the Castro name. There will be a smooth transition from Fidel to Rauls reign which means things will go un noticed. The only way for there to be a substancial change would be a sudden demise of fidel...at least that would've been the case had Raul not had time to ease on up to full leardership. One positive side to the situation. Raul may be the "younger" brother but he is still 76 years old.
Obama can't and wont do a damned thing to influence Cuba or it's leadership. I doubt he could do much with ANY country or it's leadership. He has zero foreign policy background and without that he will get nothing more than a "and just who the fuck do you think you are" smurk from any leader he engages with. Condy Rice would have ten times more of a chance to make things happen than Obama. At least she has mingled with many foriegn leaders.

You don't know much, then.
First, any president who ends the embargo and lets the free market start to have its way with Cuba would have a huge indirect influence on that country's leadership. Even the current idiot, were he or anyone under him possessed of decency and sound judgment.
Second, Senator Obama has by far the best foreign policy advisers of any of the three remaining serious candidates (the others being McCain and HRC). Zbigniew Brzezinski is posed to play a role in US foreign policy in a way he hasn't since we finally gave the Panama Canal back to Panama, transformed the Egyptian-Israeli relationship from hot war to sullen peace, and sucker-punched the Soviets into their Afghani graveyard. Prof. Samantha Power, his other main adviser, is probably the single sharpest young foreign policy mind in America today. In addition to having written the book on genocide, literally. Sen. Obama also has some well-connected establishment figures, such as former National Security Adviser Tony Lake, on his side. All that, in addition to the clean break Sen. Obama would provide from the failed policies of the current gang of thugs, and the simple goodwill the fact that Americans proved ourselves decent and civilized enough to elect someone named Barack Hussein Obama would carry among populations all over the world who are currently (and rightly, often) incensed with US foreign policy, means that an Obama administration is the best (only?) hope we have for not falling from our global perch in our lifetimes.

How many of those "foreign leaders" do you have in your cell's contact list, exactly? The general consensus around the world (and it's accurate) is that Condi Rice is an incompetent twit. I've had that conversation with a few of them. "Mingling" and "impressing" are two very different things, and the incompetent Sovietologist who kept failing upwards has resoundingly failed on the latter of the two.

Do we even know for sure that Castro is still alive? From what I understand he hasn't made a public appearance in a very long time, and all we get is a photo or a video every once in a while. Has he stepped out of the shadows because of all this?

I can't believe this, but I might actually agree with you on a political stance for once. Not like we've ever been too far off, but you're just a bit more "hard lined" than I am.
Anyway, out of the current candidates, and the options I see forthcoming, Obama is quite a ways ahead in my eyes. My second choice is McCain. HRC can go to hell.

Please tell me who you are voting for - that'll be the way to go. Cogent arguments like yours deserve recognition and support. Tell me how to vote and I'm there. Oh yeah, I forgot, I've already voted for Obama once and and fully prepared to do it again.

You are going to have to do a lot better than that to convince me anybody could be worse than our current president, let alone support anybody else in the race.

obama is a black mason... he got his support from oprah because she is an eastern star. this country was founded and still run by the freemasons. black and white masons do not organize together. that right there is a majior conflict of interest. want work... period!!!!
Are you a white supremist? What's your level of education? What are your sources?
That all sounds VERY ignorant, and falls well into the realm of racism.
