Default Android recovery software?

The kids kept getting into my wife's Samsung Galaxy S4, so she set it up to have a passcode. And apparently the default setting is that the phone will be wiped (ie, factory reset) if the wrong code is entered 10 times. U can guess what happened after that The SD card was wiped as well.

She hasn't had this phone very long, and we haven't set up any of the backup features. We have backups for everything up until a few weeks ago.

I tried searching online for Android recovery software, but I didn't have much luck. Everything I found is either "free to preview and $60 to actually recover" and/or requires the phone to be rooted. Rooting the phone to try some sketchy online software doesn't seem like a good idea. We also went to the Verizon store, but all they did was look for the Google backup and try to sell us a $60 phone case

So does any1 know of some good recovery software?

Well for the sd card you can use card reader and photorec, recuva (free) or other recovery software.
For the phone I wouldn't be too optimistic since it can contain functions which wipe the most important stuff during wipe. If it has been used chances are more and more are written over if it didn' wipe the user area properly.
You can make backups from entire phone with linux and tools but that requires most likely rooting the phone. There are free forensic software for linux to extract data from those images if you have too much time..

I had a client who had deleted a user, and the files associated with that user (230GB) of wedding photos then became unaccessible (hidden) and Disk Drill https://www.cleverfiles.com/android-data-recovery.html allowed me to mount the folder and move the contents to a accessible space.

Have you simply tried getting into recovery mode? With the phone off, hold the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together, then releasing them when the screen flickers.

That should get you into the stock recovery, from there you should find an option to factory reset the phone and get back into it.
