The Transportation Department called congressional offices late Thursday to alert them to the decision to halt the program, which offered owners of old cars and trucks $3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

Not a single turn-in here in the state of Minnesota has been approved so far. Many dealers with hundreds of 'pending' status turn-ins, and they are left to float hundreds of thousands of dollars to customers. EVERY turn-in MUST be disabled with sodium silicate BEFORE asking for the Fed money, so if you get denied or the money runs out...

They suspended the program because a) they said they money is going too quickly and b) people are taking advantage of loopholes already.

No offense dude, but those links are complete BS in all types and forms. This is from weird bloggers who don't understand about buying cars.

If you really did trade in your no-payment Ford explorer, and lets assume you get the $4,500 because you bought a Cobalt.

Assume you get a $17,000 Cobalt.....start from the beginning

1. Sales Tax - in MI 6%.....now $18,020
2. Doc fees and destination charge.....now $19,020
3. Must finance unless you pay cash

$19,020-$4,500= $14,520......even assume you get an extra $2,500 off with rebates. Now at $12,000 approx.

Most finance companies will charge you to end a lease or finance deal. Figure at least $500, unless you are with a REALLY good company that doesn't charge those fees.

Leaving the lot with a new car drops the value about 10-20%....lets assume the BEST @ 90% of original value, not financed value. Now.....$15,300.

That leaves you with $2,800, and would be your BEST situation. This is also assuming you do not drive it, and you spend no money paying for it, nor advertising it.

At worse you end up spending a whole shit ton of time and money to get around $500 back and you have no car.
