Default Two RS180s for sub duty?

Hello DIYMA,

Its time to put a system in my 1992 Nissan Pathfinder and I was trying to figure out if I was going to use equipment that I currently own or start buying some new stuff.

To that end...

I was thinking about building a fiberglass box to house two 8s because I do not want to take up any cargo area with this install.

I currently own two Dayton RS180 7" Drivers that I still have yet to hear. What would guys/girls think about using the two Daytons in a common chamber box for sub-duty? I mean, it is 14" of surface area but I have no idea how it might sound. I listen to a lot of electronic/techno type music and I am used to one DIYMAr12 in my other car.

I would use these speakers up front but its going to be 2-way and from what I can tell the 180s are much better for 3-way up front. Is that actually correct? Is anyone running the 180s in a 2-way up front and liking them?

Get yourself (2) eD 6.5" mini subs and you will be much happier IMO.

Really?

Are those the ones that are currently on sale?

If I actually buy something I think I'll go with at least eights but I've been wondering about those EDs.

When it comes to subs, it's all about moving air. The RS180s are a fine driver, but their limited xmax is going to limit your SPL in a huge way. If I were you, I would sell the RS180s, or keep them for another project.

I am *very* impressed by the build quality and value of the CreativeSound Trio8. In a very small sealed box, or a medium size vented box, it's very hard to beat. If I'm not mistaken, the Trio8 has lower inductance than the offerings from Image Dynamics, Elemental Designs, and Focal. It's only real competition is the 8" from Dayton.

Reduced inductance improves your transient response, and is generally an indicator that the driver will have low distortion.

As always, please fact check this stuff - these opinions are off the top of my head. Spec sheets are your friend.

YES! I have one sitting on the shelf, they are amazing subs.

Did 3 of them in a .7qtc sealed enclosure behind the bench seat in a Sonoma, it was all that would fit and it fit the bill PERFECTLY. With a bit of EQ work they equal or exceed a solid 10" sub in bass response and spl.

OK, Thanks! I'll check out the Trio and Tangband.

I went home to see what else I have sitting around. I have a set of the 6.5" ID OEMs that i didnt use as door speakers in my other car because i thought I was hearing some sort of buzzing from one of them. Any opinions as to how these would sound in the same box in the cargo area. The buzz probably wouldnt be audible at those frequencies from back there.

Keep in mind, I'm not married to 6.5", I just happen to have a few pairs and money is tight. I do have a spare DIYMA but as silly as it sounds it will take up to much room in the cargo area of the Nissan Pathfinder so I am going to install it with my other DIYMA behind the seats in my convertible. :-)

Will trade+cash my tangband sub for the ID's...or I could sell you an orion XTR3 sub that is shallow and easy to build a small box for. There's always a way.
