I need help picking up a pair of free-air subwoofers. I can't recall too many companies that have true IB setup subwoofers. I have a couple of soundstream Exact 12's in line but want to find out what else is out there. Any suggestions?

wouldn't think the Exacts would make for a good IB woofer although I've never heard them in that type of setup (heard them in ported boxes and they slam) I guess it all depends on trunk size, and the sealing of it.
Dyn's have a fairly low Qts, but they also have a low Fs of under 20hz which from what I understand leads them to work out quite well IB. Image Dynamics would certainly be no slouch either...depends on factors, trunk space, install, MONEY...lol |

I tried an Exact 12 in IB briefly a few years back...sounded ok. I prefer them sealed than IB...not much upper bass and bottoms quickly when really pushed since their powerhandling drops quickly in IB. I prefer the OZ 300L and 300H than the SS Exact.

x3 on the Dynaudio Esotar 1200 in an IB setup. I heard one of these setups and it sounded great and I plan on doing the same thing (not willing to sacrifice trunk space).
It didn't have that chest rattling oomph you'd get from a sealed sub, but that's to be expected in an IB setup. Pretty hard to justify the costs on the Esotar 1200... my wallet is hurting but my ears will be in a happy place soon.

How about the Exodus Audio offerings? Shiva X2? XBL^2 in IB sounds very appealing.

I run the Shiva-X (original version, not the X2 version) Infinite Baffle in my vehicle and absolutely love it. The X2 should do just as well as the T/S parameters are pretty close to the same. The X2 has D2 coils instead of D8 on the original, and I believe the X2 has a 3" coil as opposed to a 2.5" coil on the original Shiva-X.

Incrininator Audio Flatlyne has gotten some rave lately by some successful competitors and enthusiasts.
I use 2 AE IB 15's and they do a lot right. I have been considering trying the Flatlynes-I gather that I will gain some output, which is what I am after. The AE's are great-accurate, musical etc..Maybe IB isn't for me, I don't know. |

Scott Awell makes excellent subs. I have yet to hear an IB Fi, but I can't imagine it being less than great.

The Fis are really designed for IB use in the house. Putting them in a car would get you pretty boomy bass and a rather high Q especially in pairs. The HT guys like them for LFEs, but I haven't seen many people talk about them on a musical system.

They are purpose built IB subs...for the house.
For a point of reference, look at the changes between the AE IB subs for the house and the car. Home IB woofers in the car can get you bloated bass and a high Qts pretty quick. But that's just my opinion...that and I like a Qtc in the .5-.6 range for subs. For a true IB system, Qts=Qtc. This is the case for a home. But I have found that for a car IB system, whatever the Qts of the sub is, you can add .1-.15 to that number for a single sub IB to get your Qtc. And for multiples, you can add .2-.3 to that number for your Qtc. |

Mail Scott I am sure he will accommodate you, as for as a IB sub for the car. He builds to order so he can pretty much build to your needs as far as I know.

...Just pick up a couple of the AE drivers. The price is low, the driver is light weight (17-18lbs each), and the Lambda motor used a full copper shorting ring for low distortion. Given the motor an the fact that these are IB designed drivers, I would say these are going to be about the most neutral sounding subs you have heard vs. many car audio subs with simple motor designs in a sealed or ported enclosure. A true IB bang for the buck. |
