Default Sundown SD-3 Line : In the Works

Thanks to the success of the SD-2 8" model I started developing the SD-3 line; this will replace all SD-2 models in 8/10/12" sizes (there is no 15 in this series).

The SD-3 motor and coil design will become under-hung like the 8" model on the bigger 10 and 12" models -- I am also further optimizing the parameters of all models for sealed enclosures... even the 8" model will be tweaked a bit more

So this thread will be used to update about this line as parts are finished. I am starting out with the 10" cone and surround tooling then will make those prototypes first. The tooling process has started for that so hope to have a picture of a prototype within ~30 days or so. Assuming all is good I'll do the new 8" and 12" models next.

As far as release date... by the time prototype is done and production is done probably October or so.

IMO they are going to be pretty incredible... SQ fans have been going nuts over the SD-2 8s and with the SD-3 the 10s and 12s will get a huge SQ boost.

Are these going to keep the small box sizes like the current sd2? To me that is almost as big a selling point as the sq

Under-hung, relatively shallow, and relatively inexpensive

I don't expect them to be much more expensive than the current SD-2 line.

It's kind of on the back burner for now due to so many other projects being on my plate. I've really been enjoying the prototypes in my truck; so I'm anxious to eventually get them to market.

What about replacement for the SAZ1500D?

It is very easy to conflate cause and effect that are unrelated in audio design. In fact, the entire audiophile industry is based upon this ease of fallacy.

"Heck yeah you can spend more to get the same sound."

I badly wanted to use four ported SD-2 8s, but there is no way they will fit

A pair of under-hung 12" sealed with the same basic characteristics on the other hand - now that I could do for sure.

The cone for the 10" model just finished in tooling yesterday... so we can go to prototypes on that now. If the 10" is all satisfactory we'll continue on to the other sizes.

That is completely awesome.

The ONLY thing I would change about the SD-2 8 is that the surround is (out of necessity) very tall. Obviously, a shallow mount sub often needs clearance in front of it as well, and this design should accomplish that nicely.

LOL! It looks weird. Any thoughts about using a surround with a laying down "S" profile to get back a little cone area? I'm excited to see a 12" in this line up. As great as the SD-8 is the 12" is gonna be killer.

The SD-3 version of the 8" will get an inverted surround too; so yes you have seen the same room for improvement that I have

Like the Alpine or Fosgate designs? As far as I know, the pleated surround works well for the Type-R but the P3 shallow subs have limited excursion and no more cone area than you would find with a standard motor.

very cool man.

one of the things that i think you are doing the best is listening to the desires of the car audio community, and then custom tooling your own designs and parts for that purpose. the more you do this - the more your products will sell.

my hat is off to you sir. exelent stuff.
