I voted other because these definetly need to be looked at DLS Reference RM6.2 (RM 6.2) 6-1/2" 2-way Component System

out of those, would have to go with the IDs or the JBLs. for a little more, go with the ID CXS series. they have a nice midbass and the same tweeter as the top 'o the line XS series.

People on this site seem to have a love for Image Dynamics, Hybrid Audio, and DLS. HAT from what I hear are more neutral, DLS more bright, and I am not sure about Image Dynamics brand.

IMHO, HAT Imagine is best left running in coaxial setup the way they ship in the box. If you want to run them in component mode it's best to run them active. Why? Shallow tweeter crossover slope. No tweeter attenuation. If you want HAT speakers that run well in passive component mode, look at HAT Unity or HAT Clarus, which are the speakers designed for a typical component install. HAT Imagine are good deal for people looking for good raw drivers to run active 2-way front stage for a price not much higher than Alpines or Polks.

I wouldnt even say that is opinion, I have read that many times over and the science and logic justifies it. HAT Imagines are definitely BEST left as coaxial UNLESS you have a lot of choices for tweeter placement or again running them active.

The result can be highly car dependent. My gut feeling is the following.. the Imagines should have a good frequency response in coaxial mode. If you have the ability to time correct your speakers from the stereo, then you can also obtain very good imaging with them, much better than what you can get from passive components since a coaxial speaker is a single point source of sound for each side. However, the sound stage height may drop a little. With passive components, stage height should be at your eye level, if tweeters are high, but imaging could be a little off, even with time alignment, unless the tweeter and woofer are placed next to each other. Also, if the passive components come with aggressive tweeters, placing them high in a-pilars or sails may be too much for some people. I like my sound stage to be high, so I would probably pick up something else.

Another interesting possibility is to pick up on these forums a set of used Hybrid Audio Clarus crossover boxes. A lot of people run their Clarus set active and would sell their crossover box cheap, sometimes with tweeters. These boxes should work fine with Imagine speakers.

I am personally running the JBL P660C and so far I have not been impressed as much as I expected. I was able to pick them up for $160 so I cant complain. I am switching amps and deck right now so I will give them another shot before changing them. Just my 2 cents.

I'd suggest HAT imagine over the other options, I'm going to try out that set myself after reading so many threads on DIYMA and CA. Coming from Focal Polyglass and the ctx, I'm excited to see what HAT can offer

I would say the ID's, Massive CK6 V's are incredible IB in doors, JBL's also great speakers,

Polk's not great unless you build enclosures from my experience. HAT Imagine, MTX, POWERBASS skip these.

I'm a big ol' loser.

Right now you can get the Focal 165 VB for around two and a half (they are discontinued).
in my car they are in the rear doors and sound BETTER than the 165 V30s in the front doors, which sounded BETTER than the 165 KRs ($699.99) IMHO.

Also, for a buck and a half, one can purchase a JL Audio 12W3V3 subwoofer. This my friends is a bargain.

Wow, all these recommendations are for boutique components. What the heck is going on nowadays at Diyma?

I'm going to have to say other. Try Dayton RS or Peerless Exclusive midbass drivers with some Vifa NE small format tweeters.

I hear you, these are fine if you are already running active, which is not a budget conscious system for obvious reasons.

But- if you are running passive, have you ever put together a materials list for a kit of good quality crossovers and added up the cost?

I did this at parts express to build custom crossovers for my DIY drivers- over $100.00 for (2) kits!

I have run the above mids and the CK6's are way better in a door IMO.

Who says the boutique sets have a good quality passive crossover? They all look pretty basic to me. Just get a passive crossover that is compatible with the impedance loads and has a decent crossover point. You can probably buy some on ebay or from forum members that went active. Don't assume the branded crossovers are heavily optimized.
