Default Boston Acoustics SPG555-2 or JL Sealed Powerwedge?

I'm considering getting one single Boston Acoustics SPG555-2 and putting it in a sealed enclosure or getting a JL Audio premade sealed Powerwedge. You can get the JL with (2) 10's or (2) 12's. The JL would have (2) W3v3 subs in it. Both the Boston and the JL can handle 1,000 watts RMS @ 2 ohm. I am wondering which do you think would provide more SQ? The Boston is a deviation from their norm and it's really more for SPL? The JL is more for SQ? I am looking to get nice tight, punchy, controlled bass, but with some authority. I'm not sure which one would suit my tastes more... the Boston or the JL. The mono sub amp would be the Rockford Fosgate power T1000. 700 watts @ 4 ohm or 1,000 watts @ 2 ohm. Input appreciated. Thank you very much.

Ok and why SPG? Sounds like you love the thing. Why are you getting rid of it? And out of curiosity how much are yo asking for it? Is the PR really necessary?

Well i was going to say the jl because of cone area. That alone was going to yeild more output with less distortion. But an spg with a passive radiator would be a really good choice.
With the right box and tuning of the pr it could be a low end beast and still hit hard without losing it's punch.
I'v seen quite a few fail. The recone thing is cool and all but they might not be around much longer because of boston getting out of the game.

Its not necessary. It makes a sealed box behave like a ported box. You add or subtract weight to change the tuning freq like would add length to a port.

Thanks for the reply! I don't think I want to mess with a PR. SPG failing... I've seen more than one person say that. It is somewhat of a concern, but isn't Boston going to warranty all items until the warranty period ends? At $350.00 new it's a tempting purchase. I also like the fact that they are only calling for a 1 cubic ft. sealed enclosure. My main concern though is will it be to my liking? My sound preference? I have it in my head it's more for SPL.

It's most definitely not an SPL woofer. Although it has some great output with the PR.

Boston still says 1cf with the PR, but it models up just like 2.25cf vented. It's a tiny box. I'm used to giant vented boxes with this sort of output.

And it's lightweight. 1cf birch box, SPG and the PR is still under 50lbs total. I bet the JL box alone weighs that.

Yeah don't get me wrong it still sounds good. Its like jl's w7 but not really you know? I would take a g5 over the spg anyday. And with production of all the ca stuff coming to an end they may not have it to warrenty.

I spoke to a long time Boston Acoustics dealer yesterday. They have all of their stuff 40% off. He said I can go with whatever I want, but they have not had good luck with Boston over the years. I asked him what he meant by that... did they have reliability issues or what? He said no not really it was more of a case that people didn't care for their amps or subs. He said they do make nice components though. He said the people that would buy their subs usually ended up coming back and exchanged them for Alpine or Rockford subs. They didn't like the sound of the Boston subs. Another said the younger crowd didn't know who Boston was. They related more to other brands. He felt they had a great product, but maybe a little too expensive. The dealer still had G5's in stock.

I should be stopping at that place on Thursday. I will see what the situation is and if they really do have G5's left. I wish I could hear some Boston subs in car. Hate to say it, but the shops feedback on Boston has me shying away from the SPG555.

I've used the SPG555 in a sealed and ported enclosure and thought it sounded great. I may have even liked the ported version better.

Always wanted to try the G5's too though.

I've done some searches and the feedback on the SPG and other Boston subs is very good. It goes against what the local shop has said. In fact from the sounds of it the SPG may be one of the best subs ever. That's my impression anyway. It's very attractive to me... great reviews, small size, small enclosure needed, power handling. So what's my problem you may ask? LOL! I don't want to gamble I guess. What do you have now for subs and do you like them better than the Boston? I'm just curious.

I tend to switch out equipment just for the sake doing so. It usually has nothing to do with performance. I still have an SPG that I will have fun with again. It performs as well as I could hope. I've used several high end subs (Esotar2 for example) and I can still have a good time using the SPG. I've had at most 750 watts on it and it had a ton of output.

Boston makes great products in general and have done so for a long time. Sad to see them leave car audio. They were one of the few innovators, in my opinion.
