iPod and usb storage of course has taken over. also, if you're using an old, analog changer, it's quite possibly using a bad sounding d/a converter. so, the iPod, even using analog input, could sound better.
obviously, not everyone is going to use something like a Pioneer P99, but the changer I have connected to it sounds terrible.
portability and convenience killed the auto cd changer.
I think the overall quality of cd changers helped kill themselves off as well. The seemed to fail quite often and cost a shitload for what you were getting.
How long till the CD is gone... much less mutiples in a "cartritge" 4x the size of my phone (which has 700+songs on it)

I hated my CD Changer after I started carrying digital media on my phones and mp3 players
It started before that for me...
Mp3s on a single disc... 2-500 songs on a single disc... The changer started collecting dust soon after

What's the rockbox do? I was looking at the site, but I'm feeling a lil slow this morning.
It's a different OS for the ipod. It's a different interface but it also gets rid of the need for itunes. Also allows playing of OOG, FLAC, etc. All the good stuff Apple forbids.

So what do you guys use to get the same quality as with CD's? I have started buying CD's again for the better quality.
A lot of people buy CDs and rip them to their computer in WAV, FLAC, or Apple Lossless. Those are all CD quality, with FLAC and Apple Lossless being compressed formats (so a little smaller insize), but still no loss of sound quality.
I don't even use an iPod or phone to hook up in my car. 32 GB flash drives are now under $30 (check Amazon). I use FLAC for storage on my computer, and then have my media jukebox software (Media Monkey) automatically convert them back to WAV files onto the flash drive. A 32 GB drive can hold 45 to 50 CD albums worth of music. You can easily get a head unit for well under $200 bucks that has a USB plug in for the flash drive. CD quality without messing with the CDs. And at only $30 for a 32 GB drive and because of their small size, it's feasible to have more than one in the car
I still use a cd changer (CHS-S624) particularly for the optical out to my H800
still dont own an iPod and never plan to
Thats the main reason why I bought a CD changer 6 years ago....same model also..... Alpine CHS-S624.....just to have the optical output for my H700.
I just hate the way you lose some functionality with Alpine processors if you don't use one of their headunits.
I'm looking at the new Arc PS8 to simplify things....and I'd prefer to just use FLAC files on a USB thumb drive....so a new HU that has optical out and USB capabilities would be perfect.
I hated them
Cost a lot, and they never lasted more than a year or two
And then you threw then away
Never ever fixed any form of cd player
Thank god for mp3/wav etc
My BMW has a USB input
I have a 120gb ssd drive that has all my music
Sounds great, and I'm not worries about vibrations or magnets etc like with normal hard drives
Plus to move between songs is much faster
