OK I know they are not the best but I am thinking of doing somoething for my sons car, previously I had Infinity Reference series drivers in my SUV and I liked them. Why dont more people here like Inifinty for the price? Is there someting better in that price range?
Infinity Reference 6030cs 6.5-Inch 270-Watt Two-Way Component System are only $95
Infinity Reference component speakers are known to have weak midbass and peaky tweeters. Kappa seems to have peaky tweeters too according to the reviews. Neither line has been updated for a while. Having said that, it's hard to find a speaker system for $100 that does not have a drawback. It seems like this forum's favorite "budget" speakers, are the new JBL MS series and Hybrid Audio Imagine, both are considerably more expensive though.
I haven't tried the Infinity reference subwoofer, but the Infinity Kappa 120.9w subwoofer is very nice. It's a good all-around subwoofer for good sound quality that can also get pretty loud for a very good price if bought online IMO (maybe as low as $140). It should play louder and deeper than to 10 inch reference subwoofers due to its higher xmax and lower resonance.
I've run the Infinity Kappa and Reference tweeters and they made my ears bleed no matter how much I cut the top end. A lot of people like that. I can see them being perfect for the guys that annoy the crap out of me going down the street with 8 18s, no midrange, just the subs and a bunch of sibilance going down the street.
My old set weren't too bad off of the stock HU power but with 75w available with a JL amp, I could easily bottom the midbass with a 75hz highpass. I did like the vocals from the midbass though.
'84 GN 10.60@ 127mph. Infinity 3.5 coaxials and a cheap Sony HU.
I recently used a Reference 8" subwoofer. It was very good for the price. It played quite low in a small sealed enclosure, although it was a little power hungry. (Infinity sensitivity specs are pure fantasy...) They are practically clones of the JBL GTO 804 which is very highly regarded. The Infinity just uses a more conventional basket.

^ this.... U give them any power and and they are bright as hell....

so no suggestions in that price range? SHould I just get some Vifa tweets and some decnt mids and just throw something together and tune the best I can?
If you can run active, you MIGHT be able to do better with separate tweets and midwoofers for $100. It's a tight budget even then. But if you don't have the processing and amp channels, it's not an option without spending even more....

Some people like Pioneed D-series components. They're also known to have a bit loud tweeter, but probably not as bad as Infinity. Having said that, I'd recommend to bump the budget and get a set of JBL MS speakers. They're getting outstanding reviews in the reviews forum.
As for the subwoofer, I'd personally go with one 12 inch Infinity Kappa 120.9w instead of two 10 inch reference subs. Infinity Reference are not bad subwoofers for their price, but one 12 inch Kappa should do pretty much everything better than two 10' references. The 12 inch Kappa subwoofer has almost as much cone area as two 10 inch subwoofers, but a lot more excursion capability (something like 17mm vs 12mm xmax), lower resonance, and it still works well in 1cu ft sealed box. It should dig deeper and play about as loud or maybe louder than two 10 inch references. In my car it plays high quality transparent bass and delivers body massaging lows when necessary.
I think every speaker you listed is better than the Infinity set! (maybe even the Coax) Why don't you want to run them?
well the Boston's were ok, but the Boston SUbs I have sucked they sounded muddy and boomy and did not blend well so I thought I might just put those in the wifes car , she is not as important as me or my son
as others have said. the kappa and referance tweeters are harsh, bright, loud.......any other descriptions for bad, lol. if you have worked in construction for 20 years and have no hearing above 12khz, they may be perfect for you!

I'm nowhere near as particular as most here, I had a set of reference comps and hated them. The tweeters had a nails on chalkboard/breaking glass quality that was terrible, even at lower volume. Since those, I've had some Boston sl60s and a set of pioneer tsd1720c, both a huge step up. Tsd tweeters are bright but very good, that set used to sell for $110 or so, the bostons are the best I've owned, but I've only had a few sets..

I'll make a point not to tell your wife you said that!
