2002 Miata with Bose system - What mids and tweeters should I get?
I'm looking to do a budget SQ install in a 2002 Miata LS with the factory Bose system ( which will be ripped out completely )..
I don't need any subwoofer recommendations, the bose system has 8's in the doors already.
I need recommendations of 8's with relatively shallow mounting depths, that are good enough to work in a 2 way setup. Also need recommendations for small form factor tweeters that will preferably fit in the factory upper door locations. The 8's would need to play up to 3khz cleanly if at all possible..
I am undecided if I will go with a passive or active setup, but most likely it will be powered by an Alpine PDX 4.100 or 2.150 and an IDA- X305 for the HU.
This is intended to be a budget setup, not trying to win any competitions, and the system is not my primary focus in this car. I would keep the bose speakers, they sound fine ( and would probably sound better with just an aftermarket HU and amp ), but they run at something retarded like .5 ohm. I have not popped the doors off yet, but from what i've read, the 8's use inverted magnets.

You have a good 4" of depth in a Miata door. I too have the blose package in my 99' and they are way shallow. Very reminiscent of the ND8's with the front mounted magnet.
You have many 8's to choose from, budget and x-over points determine which one you can use.

Seems like getting an 8" to play 3kHz and midbass cleanly is going to be a bit of a stretch. But luckily, I don't think you have to. I was looking at the tweeter in the '01 SE (with Bose) this weekend and it seems like the tweeter itself is a 2" diameter cone tweeter. I could be wrong, and I definitely didn't pull the door off, but I was thinking "ok they probably aren't running that 8 past 1,500Hz because that tweeter is huge." I would say take a closer look at your dimension requirements for that tweeter, and go from there.

MY SPEAKERS NEED 50WATTS, I USED TO HAVE A 49WATT AMP, AND THEY WOULDNT EVEN TURN ON. I GOT A 50W AMP AND NOW THEY ARE AWESOME. CANT TURN IT DOWN THO

I would suggest PM'ing DS-21 on this forum as he has a Miata with 8's in the doors and he's running a 2-3" full range driver on top of it. He's very sharp and has direct experience with what you're wanting to do. Best of luck to you.
Now if I had to make some driver recommendations for you I would say look at the CSS Trio 8 mated up with the H-Audio X2 "wideband tweeter."
