Well I finally pulled the trigger and ordered my SUndown Audio SA8 Dual 2 ohm
I wanted the V1 since it has the larger motor structure and beefier basket so I looked around and found one on ebay for 129 shipped which I thought was a really good deal myself
I wanted to do 2 of them "And I still may eventually" but for now I am going to just build a fiberglass box for the wheelwell of my 92 civic hatchback and temporarily run it off a MMATS 1400.05 until I get around to ordering my new Polk PA series amps
Anyone else running this sub and have any thoughts on how you like it??
It will be in a sealed box somewhere around 1/2 cf and I will stuff it with polyfill if I feel it needs it, Although I dont think it will as the sub doesnt really need a HUGE box

Why so big? That's the size Sundown recommends for the SA-12.
Well I am glassing the wheel well so that is my "guess" as to what the size will end up being but I could be wrong, Like I said I will mess around with it abit to determine an actual size "unless someone knows how large the spoare tire enclosure is on a 92 civic"
I will have the "top" of the box flush with the floor of the car so I may be wrong on how big itll end up
*edit* I just realized it said 1 cubic ft instead of 1/2 cubic ft SORRY, now it makes sense why you said why so big?
one 8 is never enough, IMO. but, if you like it, then you can always get a 2nd, right?
That's the plan homie, I figured I would get this one in and run it for awhile and then order a second and sell the box to someone to make back some money
Although I dont know if you have ever seen or heard these 8's but they arent your "typical" 8" subwoofer either so it may be enough considering it's going into a small ass 92 civic hatch
it was built to be ported and be loud, and ive seen a couple people on here say they were disappointed with it sealed.
tho i have never heard it so dont know for sure
I guess I will find out soon enough, Worst case scenario it doesnt sound that great in a sealed enclosure and I figure out how to make the box ported...It still only needs like .5cf ported so it isnt an enormous box, Just gotta figure out how to do a port in a box like this
Actually thinking about it, Does anyone know HOW I would figure out port size and length when doing an odd shaped box like a spare tire enclosure??
It will be flush with the floor of the car BUT I would kinda do a fals floor to raise it up a bit "wlthough I think I will have enough airspace with it even with the floor"
I am thinking an aeroport would probably be the best way to do a port since I obviously CANT do a slot port or something like that
Anyhelp would REALLY be appreciated, I have done tons of fiberglass boxes in spare tire wells and corners of trunks but I have always made them sealed, this would be the first ported box like this I have made "although not my first ported box"
So i'm gonna go with an external port and use a 90deg elbow to bend the port and go straight up and use the flare fitting that comes with the aero ports to flush mount the port into my false floor that I am going to have to build to accomodate the external port...
Seems like a good idea to me as it will allow me to get the port length I need without having a 30" dick sticking out into my car for no reason, plus the false floor will allow me to hide some wiring that I will have
Definitely looking forward to hearing your impressions on it ported. I have mine sealed in a .4ft box and it's depressing how it doesn't hit any low notes well at all. It's definitely a "SPL" type of sub and strictly meant for ported applications. Though the problem I ran into of having such a small enclosure ported so high is that the port length is ridiculously long and would actually almost DOUBLE the size of the enclosure just to make it long enough.
I will say this though. The Sa-8 can be scarily accurate at very low volumes. Anything more than that and it just gets sloppy. I have a feeling that using a ported enclosure will be the way to go. I recently build a 1.5ft box ported at 32hz for it. I know it's way larger than recommended but the results should be interesting. Sorry if I hijacked.
Side note: I'm actually selling the SA-8 I have. It's Dual 2ohm. PM me if you're interested in picking up another one.
No updates yet as I have been busy trying to get the car fixed after hitting a tree stump that fell out of a landscaping truck and fucked up my front suspension...DESTROYING 2 brand new fucking drag radials in the process...I'm obviously a bit pissed
Damn dude that's some luck. I feel for ya. I had a my front bumper freshly repainted and installed after a wreck of mine then a few days later a stupid construction truck dropped a rock from his wheel well and took a HUGE patch of paint off and left a nice impression on it. It's the way of the world man. Since then I've deemed my previously babied 350z as a beater and have stopped caring and just beat the hell out of it because of pure hate for the bad luck this car has brought me.

Slot ported boxes? Try areo ports then. Everyone brags about that sub over on ca forum tho they all run them ported.
Tho if it's kinda lacking in sq sealed how does it perform ported? Even worse?
Good info, thanks guys. I have a question though. If I were to port my current box of .4ft to a tuning of 35hz, using a port length calculator I could achieve that frequency using a 1" x 3.58" port tube. This sounds fantastic as I'd have minimal work to do to the box to make it tuned properly. My question is, is 1" REALLY adequate to support the air displacement from the woofer or should I go something that has a little more area?
FWIW I will be using a 3" aeroport, however it will be external from the box and be hidden under the false floor with the flared edge flush on the false floor for a few reason's
1) I cant really fit the required 33 inches of port inside the box
2) I'm TERRIBLE at math so even if I could figure out how to fit the port inside the box the math would make my head explode
3) I think 3" is honestly the smallest suitable port in order to not have any port noise
