Has anyone used the Scan-Speak 15W4531 in a door with good results? (well sealed, of course). I have seen some of the 8ohm 15W's used, but not the 4ohm version. I was curious if there is a reason that I am not aware of. The car is 2011 Mini Cooper, the system is a simple 2 way active with a MS-8, HD900/5, Scan 602000 tweets and an IDQ 12v3 sub. Thanks for any help or feedback.
Thanks for the reply. I was starting to think my thread would fall off the board without a comment. The 18w's simply won't fit. The mounting depth just barley fits with the 15w, and the diameter will allow me to mount it without any trimming. I have heard Scans a few times at SBN, and was always amazed at how great they sound. Do you know if they will work ok in a IB configuration in the door? Any issues using them off axis? Thanks for any help.
No, they are great off-axis- they are still my favorite midrange driver of all time- but they are just 5.5" speakers. You'll probably be a bit unsatisfied on midbass, although they'll be competitive with almost any other ~5" driver. Definitely measure your door opening, too, since they are really 5.5", not 5.25".
They need a very small box, so if you can really seal them up, that will also help.
Door opening should not be an issue. The Mini fits up to 6" no problem, and some 6.5's will fit with a little trimming. I am a little concerned about midbass output, but the freq response shows only a small roll off down to 80hz if I am looking at it right, and I was hoping cabin gain would give me a little help there. Would you suggest trying to build a smaller enclosure inside the door, or do you think simply sealing up the door would be enough? Thanks for the help.
Well, they are VERY small-box woofers, so they won't be the best choice for IB. QTS of 0.22, yikes.
Anyway, midbass in a mini might be something completely different- I used them in my old Ford Bronco, and I'm pretty sure your car would fit in my back seat. I didn't even consider them as midbasses in my current car (G35).
Also, if you do get them, get the 15W/4531K00's, since the cone is coated. The 4531G's, which I used, are raw cardboard, and after about 2 years in my kicks they did noticeably deteriorate in appearance. I've since learned about "the wet stuff" from parts express, which is another option ($10). I didn't use that on the rev's, but I did use it on a pair of 18W/4545's, and couldn't really tell the difference after.
