Default Once again a DRZ9255 DC/DC Converter question (other options)

I have seen a number of threads over the years where people have purchased DRZ9255 source units without the DC/DC converters and are looking to buy them with no luck.

I found myself in a similar situation recently where I found one and planned to use it for spare parts, but I would like to now use it in a different vehicle and I need a DC/DC converter.

Anyway... I have tried to find specs or info on the converter. I was able to locate a number of PDF's and basically from what I can tell it is a +15v/-15v, and that is about the extent of what I know (sorry.. not very savvy when it comes to this stuff).

Now onto my question. Has anybody ever used a different/aftermarket DC/DC converter with the DRZ9255 with any luck? Can this be done? I was led to Cosel DC/DC converters and was told I can get a +15/-15 and use a second one for 36v output, but to be honest I don't know enough about this to figure it out.

Looking for anybody that has done this with success or can lead me in the right direction.

I am sure some would say contact MattR, I have but haven't gotten a response yet

Thx!

Matt R can build you a new DC/DC for the DRZ... I believe he has done this in the past for others...

As we talked about in PM, here is the info for others that might be interested.

Here is the service manual with values, specs, PCB layouts, etc.:
http://mytavria.org.ua/files/drz9255.pdf

I've heard that MattR can do this. Also, check with guys on diyAudio there are some EE types on that forum that build amps. Perry Babin (aka Basic Car Audio Electronics ) is a good resource on that forum.

Thx guys. MattR if you are looking PM me back!

Walt I have talked to Perry, he is the one that had me look into Cosel but I dont know enough to select the correct parts. I contacted a couple of resellers but once they find out it is for car audio, and since I can't supply all the detailed info all have been no help

I have a message into a friend that is an EE. I am waiting to hear from him.

Thx!

Replied to your email.

You guys forget that I do this sort of thing?

The DSPower is great for this as it's got isolated outputs between audio and digital (or in this case VFD) outputs. Is it cheap? It's less than an aftermarket kludge...

I have about 40 units left in stock for modification. I still sell 2-3 of them each month for the original, Behringer DCX2496 application. It's a little known secret that I can modify them for any application up to about 20W output.

I was referring to these other guys. They know who they are.

Due to the evil Ban Man, I can no longer put the DSPower in my sig - but I still sell it.

Aaron, can you do a 2.5 volt tap too? I was looking at the DCX2496 and using transformers on the inputs to bypass the factory, but the ADC section wants to see 2.5 volts. Maybe transformers on the outputs to do balanced to single ended conversion...and would get rid of the whole I/O factory board.

ADC section on the Behringer? I don't see any reference to 2.5V. 3.3V, yes - and we generate that on the DSPower, natively.

Voilà.

This was truly a custom job right down to the enclosure. I hit one snag when I realized that the 12V Constant and GND to the deck comes from the DC/DC converter. This is done so that the deck and all power supplies share a single ground point. So this is an off the shelf DSPower with a modified winding for the "high voltage" that the Vacuum Fluorescent Display requires. I simply disassembled the transformer, removed the original 5 and 8 volt windings (for the original 5 and 3.3V outputs), wound about 35 new turns, reassembled the transformer then modified the regulator that used to feed the 8.8V output so it now gives the required 37.6V.

The original plugs are simply Molex Mini-Fit. I stock a huge number of them for other uses, and I have the tooling for crimping the contacts. The original plug was severely corroded, so I replaced it.
