My amp has been going into protection only when my sub is plugged in and I can't seem to figure out why. The sub gain is only at the half way point, I moved my ground (now to chassis) and checked the wiring to the box and inside the box. I have it wired the way Crutchfield says to do it, but I called Alpine and they said I have it wired wrong. Top is how I have it now and bottom is how Alpine says to do it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you read 3 ohm with a meter, then you do have 4 ohm coils. Which leaves you basically with 2 final load possibilities, a 2 ohm or a 8 ohm. Both should work with no problems on that amp. Do you by chance have any other subs laying around you could wire up and see if it happens with that one?

Unfortunately I don't have any laying around. Do you think I should wire it the second way (if it is safe) and see what happens?
Would a 3 ohm load put me lower than 2 ohms at the amp?
3 ohm is the actual RE at rest. That is a bit lower than other 4 ohm coils at rest. Its not like the amp really sees a load that low the whole time. Ya, wire it up in series for a 8 ohm and see how the amp reacts. power will be cut, but if it does work, then you can start looking at the subs load being too low. I am not sure if the Alpine amps have something in them to where they wont work of the load is too low.

One other thing I didn't mention. I just made the switch from the PDX-5 to the V9 and haven't touched the wiring at all. The 5 never went into protection mode. Could it be a faulty amp?
I don't.think its the rcas he said he just swapped out amps and it was a working setup prior. This leads me to faulty amp it also might have a protection circuit for a large load if the resistance peeks and its at that level it'll go into protect.( if it has such a circuit but idk) I suggest another sub I saw you don't have another I suggest your barrow one from a buddy. Did you ever try it wired to 2 ohms?

I am running my v9 at 4ohm and I do not have this issue.
Unplug the 4 channel plugs and only run the subwoofer channel and see.
Also try a different rca cord to the sub input you might have pinched a wire or something even though you said you did not really move much.
I'll try unplugging the 4 channels and see what that does.

I am going to re-wire it tonight and see what happens. I hope I don't need to send this back. I hate being without music .
Thsir is quite a difference I ran first gen PDX amps for awhile and I always wanted 2nd gen the.differences are well documented on this forum just gatta dig it up

A bit ot, but how is the SQ with this compaired to the old amp. could you tell a difference?
I have extensive experience with both PDX gen 1 and gen 2. Gen 1 (first run blue box) had a slight floor noise issues but if you had a good line driver you could back down the gain to minimal and it would be pretty much gone.
Gen 1 also felt upon initial install and power testing without any EQ work sounded cold and dry compared to other small class D amplifiers at the time, with some good EQ work I was able to make them come alive. The PDX amplifiers do create a decent amount of heat so keep them in a well vented area.
Gen 2 right out of the box are smaller and more compact, the detachable power/ground plug is nice but it does stick out a little further then the Gen 1 power/ground terminal. The Gen 2 PDX amplifiers have really stepped up in the floor noise department or I should say (the lack of) The Gen 2 also upon initial install and power testing sounded more warm and the tonality was pretty good without any EQ work. I am running the F4 and V9 and all I have done so far with my H800 is xOver work and TCR work (self tune) I have yet to touch the EQ and it already sounds great, very dynamic and alive.
The Gen 2 is a pretty good upgrade from the original PDX amplifies and in my opinion keep right up with the JL Audio HD amplifiers as far as SQ and power go.

Thanks shinju. Thinking hard about getting a v9. Its about the only single amp that does everything I need. And its good to hear that they have stepped up in in the sq department. Only thing is it will not get much air under a tight seat.

I have my F4 and V9 Stacked in my storage compartment under a panel in my xB and they have yet to shut down from heat and I play my system at a medium volume every were I go.
Every channel is used too, So the PDX Gen 2 handle heat better.
Honestly it'd be fine they run like tanks. I had my pdxs and I never got em hot.enough to shut down in fact they really didn't get all that hot even after a full day at a show doing demos. I wouldbt let anything rest on them though. Is their air space?

Well I turned my gain down just a cunt hair and it is not going into protect mode. Kinda weird considering it was only at the half way point. Thanks for all the responses.
