Default Official Car Audio Buyers Guide - All Years

imjustjason, ollschool, and myself have come up with a way to get specs on just about every amp, eq, speaker, and crossover out there. By going through the Car audio Buyers Guides. We are going to scan or take pics of all years. The goal is to complete 1980 through 2009 in either scans or high-res pictures. If you have buyers guides from Car audio mags, please list the years that you have. So far, I have 1983 and 1987 (AUDIO magazine) . Still looking for a few more of the 80's ones that I have around here somewhere. Keep checking back for future updates. This will take some time to do, but with everyone's help, we will get it done. Please post the years that you have readily available for scan or high-res pics (JPG 750kb-1.5mb). Will be in touch when we can figure out what to do with the pics.

1983
1987

Ugh! I wish I still had all my old mags. I think 1987 was the first buyer's guide I ever bought. It had the Pioneer DEX-77 on the front I think.

Pioneer 880PRS, Tru SSLD6, Morel Supremo Piccolo, Hertz ML 1600, Morel 12" Ultimo, Tru Copper C7.4, Clarion DPX11551

Crap, the wife and I did some early spring cleaning and trashed 3 55 gallon garbage cans full of old magazines. Car audio, home audio, car, truck, cycling, running related. Just got tired of them taking up space.

Sounds like we have most of them. The mid to early 80's are missing. But bet we will come across them. We have enough to get started. Does anyone have any webspace to put the zip files? I am almost done with 87. Just need to do some cropping and zip it up. Let me know if anyone has any webspace to put the zip files. Then after we get it ALL done, I suggest we put them all in one large PDF file. Or break them down into smaller PDF's by decade. Any other ideas?

Looks like we are needing :

1980
1981
1982
1984
1985
1986

We need the scanned pages (or macro pics in HQ), and all zipped up. Pics should be 0.750-1.5mb each page) . If you can do these, that would really help. "Audio" magazine is the one with the directories for these years. Let me know if you can scan them...

Man, I had all the mags from back to '90 myself...the stack was waist high and took up too much space. So, I kept just the buyers guides but when I moved I threw those out as well. I figured I pretty much knew all I needed to know about the high end products that were out over the years. The lower line products tend to get used to death so those are harder to come by so there is not as much of a need to keep specs on those products.

However, this is a great idea in terms of getting Car audio product history on the net and in the hands of the people.

I love this project!!

I have a web-server. It should be able to handle the zip-files.

I also have loads of car-audio brochures from the 80's (like Pioneer complete from 1980 to 1995) and lots of other ones. Could that be used?

Should we make like a web-page with menues of the files?

Update... Looks like we have the webspace. C-Bass has some and Gex90 has some. Just need to get them all scanned. Have you had a chance to get any of them scanned Jason?
I still only have the 1987 done. Had to work this weekend, but will get at least another one done this week. GEX90, on the brochures I would like to get them done also. Just want to get this one done first. Then we can go into manuals, brochures, and pretty much all paperwork from all the mfgr's. Organize them by mfgr too. I think this project will take a few months, but the info will be used for a long time after. Thanks for all the input. Also, Jason, list what you have done already, and others that have the buyers guides can scan what they have. That should help take some of the workload down for you.

1987 DONE
1983 will be done this week

Default Re: Official Car Audio Buyers Guide - All Years

Just made a suggestion to how the portal could look like:

This is how I've been thinking:

Frontpage: http://retro-caraudio.servehttp.com/guide2/
Could maby contain information about the latest stuff added?

I've made 4 maine groups:

- Specifications (All technical data of the equipement. Divided into magazine names and then year)

- Brochures (Scanned brochures divided into manufacturers and year.) Example here: http://retro-caraudio.servehttp.com/guide2/Pioneer.htm
Also an example here on how a brochure (or any other scanned document) can be presented: http://retro-caraudio.servehttp.com/guide2/19821.htm

- Collectors (Describtion of "Members" collections and pictures of it. Also a page for the car-installation)

- Recomended prices (Recomended prices of each component divided into manufacturers. Prices divided in condition steps. I believe that the prices should be based on the prices on Ebay and other auctions on the Internet) Check out the Excel-file made as an example: http://retro-caraudio.servehttp.com/guide2/Pioneer1.htm (For now both links opens the same file)

Would like some feedback on the response time. I have a 10Mb upload line.

This is just some thoughts I had, and the page is just a prototype.

Is this the way to do it?

If so: What have I forgotten?

Looks good so far. Better than what I was expecting. The current price-guide I don't think will work though. I am sure you have seen how far the prices can go up and down. Deal here, then full-price plus some here. I don't see how it could ever be accurate. Think about the GEX and K model Pioneer units. Might pick one up on the internet for $50, then a week later find one in the same shape sell on Ebay for $800. (or $25)... Pricing is determined by who is wanting it, if the person selling it has it listed properly, selling it on a buy it now too cheap, paying too much, ect... I think that it would be too hard to do to get an accurate current price-guide. I would suggest taking that one off. For the photo page, I don't know how much web space you have, but it would take a lot of space for pics. If you have it, that would be a good one. I know that it will take a lot go GB or TB for space. Just some thoughts I have. The buyers guide looks good, and the brochure looks good too. The brochure space might take up a lot also. Something to think about. How much webspace do you have total? Overall, I think it looks great. Thanks Gex90

Hey Gex90, I just went through it again. Here is an idea. If you don't have lots of webspace, how about a link next to the collections? Like a link to a photobucket page. That would save a ton of space. Just a thought. Might do the same with the brochures. Just a link to a photobucket page. Free webspace is nice, but I can see where this would get real full real quick. Let me know your thoughts...

Thank you for your comments!

The price guide was meant as a hint about the value of the item (not guiding). Like the people collecting stamps or coins have. It says a price, but the bids on an auction can vary a lot. I believe many people get more enthusiastic when they can set I price on their items, not for to sell it, they just like to know. It would for instance be possible for a beginner to compare in this case the Pioneer components and find out which one is more unique than the others. To be able to do that the prices donít have to be accurate, just give a hint.

As for the space I can handle between 0,5 and 1 TB, and if we ever get that much pictures I would get in trouble with the upload speed. I will save the pictures and pdfís in dedicated directories so that if this happens they should be easy to move.

There is one case were it could be a thought to save pictures on a free web space (agree that a photobucket page could be a good idea), and thatís the collectors own pictures. In that way the collectors could upload their own pictures and keep them updated. Less work for us J

I think the "Link" would work best on the collector pics. A lot less work for you too. Just want to keep it as simple as possible.

Another thought. How about instead of the current pricing, just make it "record pricing". For instance... Lets say that we put the GEX series up, then put the record maximum prices that we have seen on it. I know most of the records on the Rockford Fosgate amps, and the Zapco amps. Lots of others too. But make it for the "wow, that sure sold for a lot" factor. Just a thought... Just think the current pricing for all the amps would really be a lot of work. Or maybe you (gex90) could do the Pioneer, Clarion page, I could do the Sony, RF and Zapco page, then someone else do the PPI page... Just throwing things around here. Any other ideas?

Sounds like the thing to do with the pricing, maby with a date attached to the price? And it's a good idea to spread the work to the members with good knowledge about each brand.

Should we create gmail accounts to receive the specs from the Car audio Buyers Guides, brochures and other stuff? Maby divided into something like specs@gmail.com, brochures@gmail.com and so on? And the guys who is scanning sends the material to these accounts and write "CA&E Buyers Guide 1993" in the subject? Each e-mail can be up the size of 20MB. If we send the documents through an email like that we will also have a good backup of it all.

I just got a 2001 Car audio & Electronics directory.

Now all we need is a 2003 and we'll have all of the CA&E's covered.
